Bullying within programs

I hesitate to bring this up because I imagine it’s a can of worms if true, but it’s important for my kid to have more info before we spend the money applying. We’ve heard rumors about bullying problems with the MT-connected sorority at Michigan. Can anyone speak to this?

Hi @NJNYvt, so I am the mom of a MT sophomore at UMich. Here is what I can tell you. Last year one girl in my daughter’s freshman class joined a sorority. There is absolutely no MT related sorority. I just confirmed with my daughter - MT’s don’t join sororities (or fraternities). In fact SMTD is a culture in and of itself. Anyway the one girl who did join a sorority did leave it as she is embarking on her sophomore year but that is because there is just no time for such things. The amount of student written and directed performances, not to mention Musket and Mainstage productions, not to mention classes! takes up all your time. Opportunities are endless. I also mentioned on another thread that we particularly chose Michigan (if anyone can chose Michigan…what I mean is, it was on the top of our list) because we were told how nurturing and supportive the faculty and environment is. We have found this to be true. Really supportive of the kids as individuals and as being educated, well rounded kind human beings. If anything - MT at UMich is like a cult - once you are a part of it you are a part of it for life and it is a major support system in so many ways. My daughter absolutely loves it. Please PM me is you have more questions.

@singoutlouise Thank you, this makes me feel much better!

Thanks @myloves UArts is on my son’s list (as is Wright) so this is great to hear. We will look into the others more carefully.
