Anyone get deferred from the ED 1 to the ED 2 pool? I suppose this isn't the worst news but what is going on here? I feel like they are binding me to a contract I didn't know I signed since it said no where that this was a possibility. Are my chances good, what factors are at work?

Don’t know about chances except that deferral to ED2 is better than denial. As to being kicked to ED2, you definitely have the option to turn it down because they cannot bind you to it if you don’t want it, but then you would be just an RD candidate. If you still want to be considered for that school as your no. 1 choice and you are not applying ED2 anywhere else then keeping ED2 may be the way to go since it does not prevent you from applying RD elsewhere.

I’m told it is binding, just as any ED 2 is binding.

Seems very odd. Are you sure your application was complete in time to be considered for ED 1?

If you were willing to be bound by ED1, I’m confused as to why you would not want to be considered for ED2? Have you changed your mind on the school or did you not realize you had applied ED at all?

No I still most def want to go. I just think they could have been clear about this. They said no one is deferred from ED, either you are in or out. Then it turns out you can be bumped to ED 2 and still have to fill out all your applications. And you’re bound to the original agreement - because you are still getting an earlier decision. Just two months later. It just seems a little odd and I’d like to know what’s behind it.

Yes, apparently there are something like 100 applicants this happened to.

I tell you one thing I am wondering here is why they don’t just defer a whole bunch of people to from ED1 to ED2. I mean, they have us, and they can wait until the ivy rejects apply ED2 and see what they get. Is this okay with everyone?

It’s disappointing, but you have no choice than to prepare your other apps; it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about it. You can tell them you’re no longer interested if that’s the case. You just gotta move along in the process. :)

Good advice, thanks.

Note that you aren’t locked into ED2 against your will. Like all ED candidates, you can any time before the decision notify the school to let them know you want to change from ED to RD rather than continuing to be bound your original ED agreement through Round 2.
