Bunch of questions about transfer

So I'm applying for transfer this fall (TAG to Davis and applying to UCLA/UCB), and due to very limited counselors at my CC, it's nearly impossible to set up an appointment that isn't 2 months from now. I hope some of you can help me answer these questions.

I am writing a TAG to Davis as a psych major, but there is no option to choose between a BA or a BS degree. Is this declared at some other time? Because the lower division transfer requirements are completely different and harder for a BS.

Are extra curriculars (unrelated to your major) from high school of any importance in transfer applications? I have a lot but I've been told it's pointless and it's best to just list your extra curriculars after high school.

During my first two years at community college, I had some personal problems and I ended up with lots of C's. However, I did manage to finish off a lot of transfer requirements. Unfortunately, this means that my "major GPA" and "IGETC GPA" are very low. I've gotten straight A's since then and managed to pull my overall GPA from a 2.4 to almost a 3.5 by the end of this summer. How important are my "major GPA" and "IGETC GPA"? Is cumulative GPA of more or less importance compared to these?

This also brings up another question about transfer requirements. For my biology lower division requirement, I took a bio class that I got a C in during my first year. If I took another biology class that is also accepted as a lower division biology class and get an A, in terms of "major GPA" could I "replace" my previous biology class with the one I got an A in?

Having been at community college for 4 years, I've taken a lot of units in order to raise my GPA from the 2.4 I had during my first two years. I'm nearing 150 quarter units right now, and I'm unsure how GPA and class transferring will work. Will all classes count towards cumulative GPA regardless of whether or not you've exceeded the unit transfer cap (105 quarter I believe)? I took a social psychology class this spring but I would like to retake it at a UC. Can I retake it at a UC if it is not transferred?

My final question is about major changing. Psychology is obviously a capped major anywhere you apply. I am considering applying as a philosophy major at Cal in order to increase my chances of admission. How does the major changing process work and if I am accepted as a philosophy major, how difficult would it be to change to a capped major such as psychology? I know I people will comment about how it's better to choose a major you enjoy rather than one that'll get me into a better school, but I want to go to Cal for personal reasons and I actually don't mind getting my undergrad degree in philosophy if I can't swap majors.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

One more question I have is which quarters do they consider for your cumulative GPA? Is it all quarters including Fall 2010 or Winter 2011?

If there is no stipulation between a BA and a BS on the TAG agreement I’m almost certain you will choose which major when you fill out the actual application for UC Davis in November. Not 100% certain, but pretty certain. I’m suprised it doesn’t state that on the TAG agreement though.

No clue about EC from high school…

Your “major GPA” is important! Your IGETC GPA I don’t believe will make a difference. They’ll just look at your “overall GPA” which is almost a 3.5, which is good. Also, your upward GPA will also be taken into consideration. No worries. No you can’t replace a “C” with a different grade – only “F” and “D”. Don’t bother retaking it.

The only GPA that will be calculuated for ADMISSION purposes only is your “transferrable GPA” – any class that is nontransferable will be left out. When you get to the Univ your GPA will be a 0.0 and it will not roll over to your new GPA. Also, they will cap you at 70 CC credits. Meaning they will only use 70 out of approx 120 units or so that you will need to graduate with. They will use ALL classes you took as a prerequiste for other classes that you may take at the Univ. You can retake the social psychology class at the UC if you want to, even if it did transfer over.

No clue about changing majors. I know some schools will say that you can’t change majors from what you were admitted to. Others might allow you to change in the same department. For instance if you were a bio major and it was “Microbiology” they wouldn’t care if you switched to “Cell Biology”… All schools are different. I’m not sure about Cal, but I have a feeling that they won’t allow you to switch out of there department – but I could be wrong.

Oh… and your last question:

They will see your GPA from the FALL 2010 semester only – for admission purposes.

@UCSCMelissa: UC’s take 70 semester units or 100 quarter units (There is a difference). This means that rikizle would be able to transfer 100 of her ~150quarter units and the rest of her classes would likely be given “subject credit”

@rikizle: “Subject credit” is fine. This just means that the UC’s will only give you 100 quarter units towards your graduation requirements but they will still acknowledge the fact that you have taken these other classes and you will not be required to take them again at the UC.

Switching majors, particularly at LA and Berk, is extremely difficult if not impossble for impacted majors such as Psychology. If you truly want to major in Psych then apply as a Psych major. However, if getting into LA or Berk is your #1 goal, then by all means apply as a Philosophy major; so long as you have the pre-reqs for that major completed.

Thank you both for your help. I’m still a bit confused about overall GPA though. Would “subject credit” (classes I take after I have 105 quarter units) still count towards my overall GPA? If it doesn’t then my GPA will be much lower than 3.5 because my last 50 or so units beyond the transferable 105 units would not be included.

For number 3 my wording was a bit confusing. I’m not trying to retake a class that I got a C in. For my lower division psychology transfer requirements (on assist.org), one of the sections is “BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE: Two Courses”. I took a general biology class that I got a C in and a psychobiology class that I got an A in to meet this requirement. However, there are other biology classes that can be taken to meet the biological science requirement. For example, human biology. If I took human biology and got an A, would this replace the C I got in general biology when considering my “major GPA”?

UCSCMelissa:

I am at a CC that uses the quarter system. Do you know if they look at winter quarter for CCs that use the quarter system?

No, they will only look at your Fall grades regardless if you’re on the quarter or semester system. I’m so used to the semester system that I forgot to take into consideration the difference between the amount of units you can accumulate if you’re on the quarter system. The GPA is going to be ALL of your TRANSFERRABLE units regardless of how many units you took at your CC.

Your question about your “major GPA” is a little confusing, only because I haven’t seen the requirements of your major. I’m a biochemistry major and we are required to take certain classes and don’t really have a choice between which classes we choose. Maybe psychology is different?? I have a feeling that they’ll just average that class into your “major GPA” and not replace it with a “different” psychology class to meet that requirement. If I saw the requirements that you’re talking about I’d probably be able to help you more… what’s the CC you’re coming from and the Univ you want to go onto and I’ll check it out on assist…

I definitely should’ve included that in my initial post here’s the link:

[ASSIST Report: FOOTHILL 09-10 UCB Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

I am a De Anza/Foothill student but the De Anza page didn’t have the class I took at Foothill so I’m using the Foothill link.

Under the “BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE: Two courses” section, I took Bio 10 (equivalent to BIOLOGY 11 at Cal) which I got a C+ in. I also took psychobiology at De Anza (Psyc 4 at Foothill), so I’ve completed my biological science requirement. I was hoping I would be able to take one of the other bio classes in order to make up for my C. Even if I can’t replace the class for my major GPA, the averaging idea that you mentioned would be a good reason for me to take a bio class.

That’s a tough one… chances are greater than not they will average it if you take an additional course. But, looking from this report the only “single” class you can take for it to meet this requirement would be “Human Biology - BIOL 14” if you took the other Biology class you would HAVE to Bio 1A AND 1B OR Bio 1B AND Bio 1C. If you ONLY took Bio 1A it will not meet that requirement. I’m almost certain they will average it out! I’m 90% certain they will do that and about 10% chance they will take a different course as a prereq and not use your class with a C in calculating your GPA.
