Burnett Honors College @ UCF

My D was was accepted to UCF this past Friday (9/14/07). She is now working on her application to the Burnett Honors College. Does anyone have any idea how long it takes to hear back from the Honors College regarding admission?

S heard back from Burnett, I believe, within a couple of weeks. They were very quick to respond to his application. I just don't remember ... exactly. After he was admitted, they then sent him info on honors housing and honors congress. He also went to a Friday afternoon info session for admitted students.

I'm assuming he is attending Burnett this semester, right? Is he in Honors housing, if so, how does he like it (and Burnett in general)? I one D at UCF already who really likes it, but she is not in honors, so I would like to hear what your S thinks.

1bandmom,

Yes, my S is in Burnett this semester. It's his first semester, and he has 3 honors classes. One of them is the required freshman symposium. So far so good ... as far as Burnett. They worked with him with his schedule, especially when his first year exploration advisor put him in the wrong class so he needed to switch things, which meant taking an extra honors course so he wouldn't have to dramatically change his schedule. (They prefer only two honors/semester of the lower level courses). He does live in the Towers, and he LOVES it. He appreciates being on campus in essentially an apartment. His roommates (whom he didn't know before school started) have been great -- very compatable. None of them are big partyers so that's cool. He hasn't complained of too much noise, but he's lucky ... their suite's on an end. I don't think he's had too much time to get thoroughly involved with the social aspect of the honors program, yet, but he's enjoyed his profs ... especially his econ prof. They've already done counseling for scheduling next semester, which he's pretty sure of ... needs to meet with an econ. advisor because he has so many credit hours that he's about ready to be admitted to the business school and wants to double check a couple of things. I've met the director a couple of different times. I really like her ... very knowledgeable, personable, and seems to really care for the kids and want them to have the best possible opportunities.

Does anyone know the requirements for the honors college?

Here is some info from a news update on the UCF website a few weeks ago:

"In fact this year's freshman class has an average grade point average of 3.7, an average SAT score of 1217 and an average ACT score of 26. The Burnett Honors College incoming class posted even better statistics with an average GPA of 4.075, an average SAT score of 1361 and an average ACT score of 29.7."

You find out more info by going to the Burnett Honors College link on the UCF website.

Thanks for the info, Zebes. D is hoping to get her application in by the end of this week.

You're welcome, #1bandmom. The things we've really like are priorty registration for all classes, not just honors classes. That's been a very nice "perk." And it's 'til graduation, as long as you are doing what's required for the program. He's also enjoyed the intimate size of the classes. S will take one or two honors classes this spring, and that will be the end of his lower course requirements for honors -- 12 hours total plus symposium. Then he'll hit the upper level requirements. Jet, some of S's stats were 1410 SAT, 32 ACT, 3.8 or 3.9 (short term memory problems here ... have to look it up. <g>), 9 AP's (passing all 9 exams for credit).</g>

Good news! My daughter received her offer of admission to Burnett on Saturday. She's very happy. UCF/Burnett Honors was her first and only choice!

Make sure she watches the mail for additional info on the honors congress. I believe there's a $100 fee that's required. Paying this ensures your "seat" in the college, as well as helps pay for the activities of honors congress. Also, she should get info on the Towers housing, I believe. There will be a time period that she'll need to let them know if she wants to live in the honors section of Towers housing. My S did that, and he's ended up with 3 great suitemates -- luckily none of them are big partyers which suited my son very well.

zebes

He's also in the Towers, and is very happy with his roommates and the whole situation. If I could go back and change anything, I wouldn't. It's that good. He has classes with one of his roommates, they all seem very compatible, and the Towers area is the place to be on Game Day.
I'll echo the info on the early advising/registration, along with the kudos for the small Honors classes. In my opinion, the Honors College takes what was already a terrific college value (UCF) and makes it an INCREDIBLE value.

BTW, my older son was in the Honors College at UF, and didn't live in the Honors housing. In fact, due to a mix-up, he ended up off-campus. Apples to Apples, my UCF son is having a MUCH better college experience, all the way around.

mom2three,

I have a question about the UF honors program. My D's considering both UF and UCF, assuming she gets into both, and I'm curious about something. You know how UCF gives priority registration to the Burnett kids, does UF give full priority registration -- for every class -- for their honors program, as well ... or do they only give it for the honors classes? I've heard conflicting things, so I'm confused. DS is much more seriously considering UCF since her bro's been there, but I want her to have all the facts.

Thanks for the excellent info. We will definitely be watching for housing info and the reply form. The Pegasus Gold Scholarship was a lovely surprise! I already have one D at UCF (not in the honors program). She lives in Tower 4 and loves it. This is her sophomore year and she is having a great college experience.

Zebes,
You'd have to call them and ask. DS didn't stay in the Honors College at UF. I can't make an apples to apples comparison, because he wasn't on campus, and he wasn't in the Honors dorms. That was a huge mistake, and one we didn't repeat with DS#2.
UF has a "Fridays with Honors" campus visit program. I would try and plan a visit and ask those questions.

One difference is that Burnett is considered a "College" but UF's program is the "Honors Program," according to their website. Don't know if that means anything or not.

Just because I'm interested, Zebes, what econ is your kid in? And if he's in Macro, what prof does he have? I'm in Macro Honors with Pennington and he's a great professor.

All said and done I really love my honors classes!

My S has Glenn Harrison for Econ. He gives extremely difficult tests; I remember my S said several people dropped the course after the first test. But S is doing well, and he finds him challenging and engaging. I think from listening to DS that Harrison isn't for everyone, but so far ... he's been great for him and given him some good advice, too. The class is the micro class, as he AP'd the GEP macro class. DS is going for a B.A. in Economics.

zebes

Ah..I've got Micro next semester. I don't know if I want an economics degree or not, but it'll be a business degree of some sort if it's not...

Overall, I love being in Honors here, you get preferential treatment in some places, like being able to register early. I don't live in honors housing, and none of my roommates arein honors, and I regret that, somewhat. I would really prefer to have roommates that were in honors, I think they would be easier to get alone with then.

My S was accepted to UCF and expected information about the honors college with the acceptance letter. He has 1360 SAT, 4.2 GPA.
I've heard that the "invitation" usually arrives with the acceptance. Is this true.. or should he simply apply?

Thank you.

My daughter received a postcard or letter about 4 weeks after she was accepted saying if she was interested in applying to the honors college to send back the request for application or go online and request an application. They do not publish requirement stats and encourage anyone interested to apply.

Thank you so much for that information.
