Which one would you recommend staying in if I had to choose between the two (central will be first choice obviously)?
I would think Bursley would be better because it has it's own dining hall, and is closer to everything else, but I heard baites has the best rooms (with private bathrooms too). Please give me the pros and cons of both places.

Also, how often are buses available at these dorms?

baits sucks cuz it doesn’t have a dining hall. people would have to walk to bursley everyday. since it’s ur 1st yr nx yr, just stay on central, cuz most of ur classes are gona be around CC lil, IMO

I currently live in a triple suite- baits 1

Pros:Own bathroom, big room, guaranteed spot on the bus(around midterms/finals this is HUGE)

Cons: Laundry room only has like 3 washers/dryers and it totally sucks waiting for people’s laundry to finish. No dining hall, enough said. The walk from Baits1-Bursley really isn’t THAT bad, but it becomes a total pain in the winter.

If you get Coman-Baits 2, it’s not so bad I guess since Bursley and Coman are literally right next to each other.

yeah sometimes you’re unable to get on the bus @ Burs because so many students try to get on there + the kids from Baits 1 and 2 are already on. It may not seem like such a big deal, but when you’re running late/exam week its nice knowing you will def get on the bus. You could always walk to the Baits stop, which many people do, but even then you might still get locked out during finals week because 50% of people @ Burs walk over to Baits 2. Baits 1 on the other hand is a guaranteed spot no matter what because people are way to lazy to walk from Burs-Baits 1

Ouch, so people have missed exams before because the buses were full? Do professor’s usually let you retake them if you miss one for this reason?

Of course not. This is college. It’s your responsibility to show up to the exam on time. Wake up a half hour earlier and take the earlier bus and that’s that.

This is really rare, even during exam week. On top of that, there are other non-Bursley/Baits buses to Central that have stops less than 5 minutes away - Commuter South and Diag-Diag at Pierpont, plus Northwood (whch has a stop 200 feet away from Bursley’s stop).

Also, Central is a 30-45 minute walk away from anywhere on North, so if anyone is really paranoid about not catching a bus, it’s simple enough to wake up a bit earlier and walk. Or bike, or whatever.

Posters here in the past and my son’s friends have said there’s something about the layout of Baits that isn’t as conducive to socializing and you feel a little isolated. On the other hand, that could be a good thing…

As an ex-Baits resident, I would advise against living there. There’s not much of a social life, and you’re pretty isolated from everything. Go with Bursley.

I live in Bursley, and I’d definitely recommend Burs over Baits. Baits I is the farthest thing from anything else on campus (unless you count in Northwood apartments). Bursley has a more livelier feeling to it, and is definitely the more social one.

As for the bus issue, if you’re at the Bursley bus stop sometime from xx:10 - xx:40, you can more likely than not get on the bus.

I live in Baits II right now and I urge you NOT to live there. The place is a complete hole. It smells really bad inside because they only clean it every Friday, even though people keep trashing the halls (aka leaving food … can you imagine how bad milk smells when it goes foul after a week?) The rooms may be a little bigger and you share a bathroom, but if you’re a guy, be forewarned, guys don’t usually have a good sense of sanitation and the housing people will NEVER clean the place. As for the social scene, most people live behind closed doors. In fact, you’ll hardly ever know the people in your house, though you’ll grow close with a few people or so, but the whole community thing is an utter failure. I personally think that Housing emphasizes the “community living” thing so that they don’t have to clean the halls as much (they encourage you to clean everything), so they can cut down on costs.

The only upside to Baits is that it’s one of the first couple stops of the well-traveled Bursley-Baits bus route, so you get some good seats, which comes in handy in the morning, because some people who board at Pierpont sometimes cannot board a BB bus because it simply gets so packed, and this isn’t good if you’re in a hurry.

Bursley was built around the same time as Baits was, and it is in MUCH better shape than Baits. The hallways and bathrooms are cleaned religiously (I’ve been inside a bathroom/shower room and it is in much better shape than the ones in Baits). Heck, it even has WiFi, its own dining hall, and the lobby is air-conditioned. There’s a wonder why people say Bursley will be the last hall to be remodeled. And yea, people seem to enjoy Bursley more because people manage to connect more. (aka more doors are open to start with) And a big upside for engin students is that it’s SO close to classes.

I’m gonna be a sophomore in engin next year and I want to live in Bursley (I’m choosing it over N Quad + Stockwell)

Hey ab2013, what were your housing preferences? Did they force you into Baites even though you requested something else?

Also, do people who request roommates usually end up in Baites? Or is there a good chance we’d end up elsewhere too (assuming we choose Central as 1st choice and bursley as the second choice).

it doesnt matter if you request a roommate, your chances of getting on central or north are about the same. if your put on north, bursley is definitely better than baits. I lived in bursley my freshman year and it was the best experience. A lot of people give north campus a bad name, saying its boring or too far but I loved it. Bursley is a great dorm, it would be better if it was on central, and ya sometimes the food sucks, but its a lot better then some of the alternatives. The rooms are decent size, especially compared to the rooms in markley.
