My son wants to be accepted to UMD College Park, and to the Smith school. We are not confident he will be accepted to the business school as a freshman. So now we are wondering if he should consider other schools where he's more likely to be accepted into the business school as a freshman. Any advice from people with experience? If it matters, he has about a 3.3 unweighted GPA and about a 4.0 weighted. He has 730 on CR SAT, and 670 on math. Any advice for other schools with strong business programs he's likely to be admitted to WITH merit scholarship?
Thanks

He would definitely be a direct admit to Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington. Would also get merit aid, probably 11k per year or slightly less.

1214mom, you should always consider a range of colleges. There are reach, match, and safe schools.

First, here are the GPA/SAT (2400 scale) score that were accepted to UMDCP.

[University of Maryland - GPA and Test Scores Needed for Admission for the University of Maryland in College Park](University of Maryland: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA)

As for other schools, you may want to look at Loyola MD and Delaware to name a couple. Of course, it also matter how far your son may want to go. Here is another list to consider.

[The Complete Ranking: Best Undergraduate Business Schools 2013 - Businessweek](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?)

But the long and short of it is you can be successful no matter where you go to college.

Thanks for the reply. I will check it out. If I remember correctly they also have a strong journalism major, but I could be confused.

Thanks. I am familiar with the ranges for UMD, but I can’t find info. For freshman admits to the business school, or for that matter what needed to be accepted later. I know it’s pretty competitive. I’ve also looked at the Businessweek rankings, but I’m not sure what to think of them co pared to other rankings.

mom, I think there is some validity to all the rankings. Obviously the criteria is different, but on the list I attached and look at the top 25 schools. They all seem like pretty good schools, don’t they.

Yes the list seems reasonable. I’m very familiar with the reach, match safety thing. I was successful helping my older son get a substantial merit scholarship by figuring out the right target schools. This son has pretty good but not great stats, so I’m trying to find the right schools. He really wants to go to UMD CP, and I will be so happy if I get to pay in state tuition. My older son really wanted to go away.
Thanks for the advice
Btw - I heard from UMDCP and it sounds like he’s in their usual range for freshman business admits!!!

Hello,

Bthomp1, I’m trying to figure out why you think my son would get a substantial scholarship for business at the Kelley school. It actually does look like a great school, but. Couldn’t find anything that indicated he might get a scholarship of close to 11K. Please advise… Thanks

Here is a link to the website with the academic requirements:
[Undergraduate Program - Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park](http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/undergrad/admissionrequirements.aspx)

It seems that only students that are highly competitive going in are granted direct admission, but I didn’t find any specific stats for getting in as a freshman. The statistics for internal transfer are stated further down on the page.

Hope that was what you were looking for!

Thanks but I was looking for information related to the Kelley School.
