Hello everyone, I am a junior in high school this year and I am setting my senior schedule. I wanted to know if there is any point in taking BUS X-100 in high school. My school has a dual-credit program where I can also earn IU credit. The grade carries over to IU Bloomington as well as the credits. I will be a direct admit to Kelley, since I have a 1390 CR+M SAT and a 4.3 GPA. Can someone please tell me if I should take the class? I have heard that direct admits should not take it, but should I take it? There are no other APs that I can get useful credit from, and I will already have all of the Gen Ed requirements done going in except for Foreign Language. So should I take BUS X-100 in high school? I am not really worried about the difficulty since I am getting an A in M119 currently through the same dual-credit program. I plan to attend IU Bloomington in 2015 and major in accounting at Kelley. Thanks in advance for responses.

OP,

I don’t think that you need X100. You will have plenty or too many of those in the future.

1) How about AP Bio or AP PSY? you need one natural science course.
2) Are you taking AP ECON? It can take care of E201 and E202.
3) You can take M118 or the equivalent (M135 at IVYTECH)
4) Take AP Calc AB or BC. They can take care of M211 & M212 in case you would like to get a Math Minor.
5) Take AP STAT so that you can have an easy time with E370 or its equivalent.
6) Some computer programming courses or AP Eng/foreign language even though there is no foreign language requirement

If your school does not offer these AP courses, you can take some of these at local CC.

X100 is not necessary for direct admits. What you learn in Icore and your accounting classes will dwarf the material that is covered in X100, and X100 is not required for any Kelley majors.

Sounds like you are in Indiana, since you are taking ACP classes. If you are near Indianapolis, consider taking A100 the summer before you go to IUB. You can take it during one of the six-week sessions at IUPUI; it meets only once per week for six weeks. This is way easier (easy A for your IUB gpa) than taking it at IUB for twice a week classes for eight weeks and having to take much, much harder tests at IUB for A100. Getting A100 out of the way before starting at IUB will allow you to take your A201 and A202 classes your freshman year and then take A311 your sophomore year; A311 Intermediate Accounting I on your transcript before taking Icore will help you stand out from most other accounting majors and get internships easier, as most IUB accounting majors do not take A311 until during Icore or the semester after Icore during their junior year. Many firms want their interns to already have taken A311, in part because A311 is a weed-out class and they don’t want to give internships to people who might not pass it.

Agree with Ace that you should get E201 and E202 out of the way before coming to IUB or during a summer after coming to IUB. Those two classes can be very tough on your gpa at IUB.

Also, you can take E270 at IUPUI instead of E370 at IUB. E270 meets only 12 times in six weeks at IUPUI, compared to about 50 meetings of E370 at IUB during a regular semester.

I have already taken/will take

AP Micro
AP Macro
AP Psych
AP Human Geography
AP Lang and Comp
AP Environmental Science
AP Stats

Do I need to take M118 for an accounting major? I have the Mathematical Modeling Gen Ed done (and all of the rest of Gen Ed except for Foreign Lang), so I don’t need it for that. I can take it through ACP, and if I do need it, would you recommend replacing AP Stats with it? I would get credit for STAT-S 300 with AP Stats. It doesn’t count for Gen Ed and I don’t think I need it for the major either. I might be able to fit both of them in and remove a blow-off personal finance class if I need to. And finally, if I should take AP Stats is there any point of taking the AP test if I only take the class to gain knowledge for E370? I do live in Indiana by the way. I am in Fishers which is about 20 min away from IUPUI. Thanks for the response

All business majors need M118 (or an approved substitute).

All IUB students are required to take W131 English Composition or its equivalent. ACP W131 is offered at your school. However, you may be exempt from taking it based on your standardized test scores, so you might be able to take something more useful at Fishers senior year. Here are the requirements for gaining exemption through standardized test scores:

Also, you don’t need to take a foreign language to graduate from Kelley. See the bulletin.

I noticed that your school offers Adv. Business College Credit/Principals of Business Law (BSU). You could probably take that course at Fishers and transfer it from Ball State to IU/Kelley as a substitute for Kelley’s BUS L201, which is an Icore prerequisite. According to the Credit Transfer Service, the BSU course Principals of Business Law (BL 260) will transfer for credit for IU’s BUS L201; but you might ask your counselor to be sure that it transfers. I’m assuming that if it shows up on your Ball State transcript, that will be good enough for IU to accept it.

Also, the class "Principles of Accounting - (AOF - Anderson Univ.) might transfer to IU/Kelley as BUS A201. According to the Credit Transfer Service, ACCT2010 Principles of Accounting I at Anderson University transfers to IU as the equivalent of BUS A201. One of the advantages of taking this class (as well as the BSU business law class) from Anderson Univ and transferring it to IU is that you only need a solid “C” or higher for it to transfer, and the letter grade you get will not be figured into your IU gpa (unlike the ACP courses like W131).

Those two classes (and W131, if you need it; and you definitely need M118 Finite at some point-- at Ivy Tech it is easier and won’t be a threat to your gpa) may be more useful to you than the S300 equivalent, which will not meet the Icore prerequisite requirement anyway. Also, you should not have any trouble with E370 (and definitely not with E270 at IUPUI in the summer, which is the equivalent of E370 at IUB).

Good luck!

Thanks for all of this useful information! Hopefully, I will have W131 done with AP Lang and Comp if I can get a 4 on AP test. I know that I don’t need a foreign language to graduate from Kelley, but I do need it or world culture credits to fulfill the Gen Ed requirements. It also says that I need at least 6 credit hours in residence on campus. I will probably take 2 world culture courses on campus to fulfill it, since I should have all the rest fulfilled with AP credit (if I get good enough scores) and ACP M119.

http://gened.iub.edu/requirements/genedrequire.html

Regarding these 4 courses (AP Stats, M118, Principles of Accounting AOF, and Principles of Business Law), which would you recommend taking? I have a year and one semester open in my schedule, so I will probably take one of either AP Stats or M118, and one of the other 2. Principles of Business Law would be preferred because I would have to go over to the other High School to take the accounting class.

Are you saying that I would be okay in E 370 without a high school stats class? I am doing very well in AP economics and also good at math in general. Thank you so much for helping me.

A 670 on the SAT verbal exempts you from W131. Don’t know if yours was 670 or higher. I know my son both scored over 670 and took W131 ACT at his high school; so, for him, it was a waste to have taken W131 in high school (except for the A for his IUB gpa).

A201 can be a difficult grading class at IUB; so, I’m thinking if you only needed a solid C from Fishers/Anderson Univ that you would be avoiding that hard grading IUB class. Also, you can’t take the equivalent of A201 at Ivy Tech, whereas you can take the equivalent of business law at Ivy Tech and transfer it to IUB. As an accounting major, you can get started on you upper-level (300-400 level) classes before taking Icore, as opposed to most other majors, including finance, which usually require taking Icore before doing the upper levels. Taking A311 before you take Icore will help for getting internships, as most accounting majors don’t take A311 unitil after Icore. But either A201 or L201 would be good to get out of the way.

You don’t need a stats class before taking E370 IUB or E270 IUPUI . These are introductory statistics classes. At IUPUI, the only prerequisite for E270 is finite math M118. My son took it a few summers ago from Prof Towfighi and exactly half the class got an A+, A, or A-. It is offered this summer as a web-based class, with all quizzes and exams also online.

OP,

I think that you have enough credits. Keep in mind that you should give yourself a chance to explore in college. Take some interesting courses with the best professors at IU. The World Culture courses serve that purposes. If you could be involved in a merger & acquisition case in the future, you may wish to take L293 with the best professor IU offers.
