Just got a job as a busboy at a local small restaurant and for some reason feel slightly nervous about it. I start tomorrow and its my first job ever. Anybody got any tips, stories, etc.?

You’ll be totally okay. I was nervous when I started as a waitress, and now I think of how silly I was to be! Just listen and learn what they have to tell you, and you won’t have anything to worry about!

I’ve got a few tips …

Smile. No matter what happens, smile.

Be prepared to be stressed - there is nothing quite like the stress of working in a restaurant. Restaurants are extremely fast paced, and you will find yourself running around like a chicken without its head for the first few days, but on the flip side, you get to see the fruits of your labors every time you turn a table, and it is all worthwhile in the end. And the greatest part? Whatever stress you have goes away the second the last table goes home.

Don’t be afraid of guests. Some will be really kind; others will be rude. But nobody is upset at you … they just want their food, the silver to eat it with, and water to wash it down.

Embrace your mistakes… you are going to make a TON of mistakes (some you’ll make five times!), but each mistake should teach you how to do your job a little bit better.

Don’t give up. It can be hard when you first start, and a lot of people wash out after a few days. Fight the urge to quit, and in two weeks you’ll be a pro.

Once you learn what you’re doing, watch what the servers do. One night where someone doesn’t show up could be your ticket to waiting the tables and making 3-5x what you make as a busser!
