My son got a forced triple in Bush. Does anyone know anything about Bush? Is it only boys? In the letter it says they try to move everyone out of triples before orientation. Is that true? How do they decide who to move? I guess we're kind of in limbo as far as having the "who brings what" discussion" while we wait for this to resolve. He's kind of disappointed since he requested all freshman.

Unfortunatly many people request all freshman dorms and there is just no way to promise that to everyone. Bush is a downhill dorm located about 10 feet from Dewick and Hodgdon takeout. It is next to tilton, haskell and hodgdon dorms. It is not an all male dorm, though it seems as though they have mostly placed all men on one floor or too. Several of the rooms (I am assuming especially the tripled ones) are rather large. It is a dorm on the smaller side in terms of the number of people it holds. I have no idea how they decide who to move, thats sort of within res life. I would have the who brings what discussion as if it were fine just to be on the safe side. I have found that Bush is majority freshman and sophomores. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks SASA; I'm sure it will work out whatever. We'll hold off a bit on the discussion with roomates though. Don't want to promise a TV then be assigned a different room or chip in for refridge etc. It can get kind of messy, but then I'm thinking of girls(my only other dorm exp is my daughter)not boys.

Hi, my son (who will be a sophomore) and several of his friends got a call from the Tufts housing office asking if they would be willing to give up their double rooms in Miller for singles in other dorms. Apparently there IS room on campus for all the freshmen but the available rooms are singles which are reserved for the upperclassmen. Hang in there, this will probably be all worked out soon.

Thanks jjsmom; I don't know why they do that. They should just assign singles outright instead of having so many upset kids who don't who feel unsettled after waiting so long. There seem to be quite a few kids who would want a single who were denied one, kids who didn't want freshman housing that got it and vice versa; same with healthy living etc. I'm not too impressed with the program their mainrame uses.

I have worked many an orientation program and I just have to say that there is no way to make everyone happy at least to what they would have wanted outright. But everyone seems to end up happy. Singles are not given to freshman usually, but they are doing this to make sure that people get out of triples. They even added a whole other freshman dorm this year (as well as a new one last year). They are trying.

At least they are making that effort. Many people I know at other schools are just telling them that they are stuck with it. Tufts is trying to fix the problem with the new dorm they have under construction.

Dondi, I absolutely understand your frustration and know I'd feel the same if this is what happened to my son last year.

However, more Tufts admits enrolled this year than expected and now the housing office is working really really hard to find them a permanent place to hang their hats this year. It WILL work out, I'm sure. There are many sophomores who will happily give up their double rooms for singles, just be patient as the housing office calls them and works this out.

Hang in there!

Dondi- I got a forced triple too, in Tilton. I'm glad that I got all freshman but...I think I'd be willing to sacrifice it for a normal double or single. Where did you see that they try to move triples? Anyone know how/when we'll be notified? I'm definitely concerned about some of the issues you mentioned Dondi (I am a female).

1stgen: As in my previous post, the Housing office is absolutely working on getting the freshmen out of forced triples and into standard doubles. They just called my son this week to ask if he would give up his double for a single and he is just one of hundreds of kids they need to call. As soon as they've contacted all the upperclassmen who are not already in singles, they will move the freshmen into the vacated doubles. So, be patient! :)

A letter accompanied his assignment that said they would try to move those in triples out in the weeks before orientation but that this was optional since if you stay you move to the top of the lottery next year. Even after school starts triples have 1st preference if rooms become available.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come of as impatient to be out of the triple.I do appreciate the complexities of trying to place however many first year students, all with their own issues and 'preferences.' I only meant that I'll be more relaxed when the matter is settled, no matter where I end up. It just feels up in the air right now.

I totally understand; my son feels very unsettled and I'm hoping this is resolved before orientation.
I'm sure its very complicated to arrange housing and its a shame they didin't start this whole process sooner as most other colleges do and thereby resolve it sooner. It's a tough time(end of August) with vacations etc.
I know there is no way to make everyone happy Sasa and although my son is disappointed about freshman housing, he's over that already he just wants a double. He realizes that Bush is in a good location. I don't think expecting a double room at Tufts' room and board rates is unreasonable. He wouldn't even mind a triple if it was in a triple room.
I know that in past years Tufts had to resort to hotel/shuttle so I guess they're use to dealing with this.
All that being said I believe things happen for a reason so in the end it will probably work out. Its just that it has been such along road from application until now.....

I wish him good luck.....though I have never heard of any student I know having to live in a hotel....

is Bush Hall a social hall and is it coed?

Thanks; I guess I'm dating myself but if you ask around in admissions to anyone whose been there>10yrs they'll tell you.

Bush is coed by room (as the majority of Tufts dorms are) and the socialness of certain dorms varies by year. Two years ago, it was very social (one of the floors was the loudest floor on campus) but the year before, it was much more quiet.

I don't think a microfridge is going to accomodate 3 boys yet I'm sure space is limited in forced triple to buy a refridge without seeing room. Any advice? Housing says to proceed as if he will be in the room on the 31st eventhough they hope to resolve triples before then but I'm not sure how. I guess he could just wait until he gets there but without a car its probably not to easy to buy a refridge.

Hi, my son just told me he knows many sophomores who just yesterday decided to give up their doubles for singles. They just needed to work with the housing office so they were in the same dorm near each other. So the forced triple situation may resolve after all.
