DS3 is a rising HS Junior and is considering TAMU for accounting. He is top 10% and has practice SAT scores just under 1400. (V and M only)
Can he be directly admitted as an accounting major?
Does Mays offer a 5 year Masters in order to sit for the CPA after graduation?
Thanks for any insight.

No, you are not directly admitted to accounting as a freshman. Everyone starts as general business (BUAD), but they do ask on your application for admission which field you’d like to major in. There are a series of courses to complete prior to declaring your upper division major ( 2 calc, 2 econ, 2 acctg, 1 info systems, 1 mgmt) when you have completed those you apply to your specific major. Most students tend to get their specialty, provided you perform in the above courses. Yes, Mays does offer the 5 year masters program. It’s called PPA. Here’s a link that might help answer your questions. http://mays.tamu.edu/acct/ppa/faq/

Thanks for the information. Do you know if admission to the business program follows the auto admission guidelines or if it’s holistic? It would be a huge stress reliever to know if he can count on admission with an early application.

Yes, it follows the auto admission guidelines - provided there is space available at time of admission, he will be admitted to Mays . They did a cutoff this year, with holistic reviews (didn’t release the % that I could tell) for the remaining slots. FYI most of their admissions are auto/academic admits. So, yes , apply early and enjoy the stress relief!

Thank you so much! :)

My D just graduated from the PPA program. She did it in 4 years by going full time for 2 summers also. You actually sit for the CPA exam during your final semester so she finished it before graduation. There’s also an internship semester in there too. It was hectic. You have to be fully committed to the course plan, but she really wanted to get done and get started with her career. Having a job offer in place her final year was nice too.

Debbie, that’s impressive! Did she have a lot of AP credit?
We were on the TAMU website yesterday trying to figure out the possibilities. Looks like he will definitely need to take the math placement test (no exemptions for business) but, we couldn’t tell if his future AP BC Calc class could earn credit.
It seems so early to gather information but, then we remember he’ll actually be completing his applications next summer.

To determine how AP credits are accepted go to - http://dars.tamu.edu/Testing/AP,-SAT,-ACT,-and-Other-Information-for-Incoming-F

She did have a lot of AP/DC credits. A&M accepted everything she had. I don’t remember how many hours it totaled. The Math placement test is not a big deal, don’t worry. Get this…she also planned her wedding and married 3 weeks after graduation! Do not do this…it was beyond stressful. It’s all good though, we survived.

@PokeyJoe. Here’s a link to the AP standards for credit at A&M.

@Beaudreau I can’t see your link but, it may be the same as above.

Thanks guys. I think he’ll be in excellent shape.

@Debbie7452 Congrats on your new MIL status! And Wow!
Way back when, I was on the “no guy is worth my time - focused career girl track.” God has a sense of humor though. I ended up getting married my senior year of college over Christmas break. -my Mom about had a heart attack -Still happily married, 22+ years later :)
