Business Administration and Accounting double major

<p>Hello, I am in a dilemma at the moment.</p>

<p>I am a freshmen in college and I am currently in my first semester. Right now my major is Political Science but I am definitely going to change that soon.</p>

<p>I have to speak to an adviser tomorrow about my classes for the spring semester and I wanted to double major in Accounting and Business Administration. I wanted to do this because I either wanted to be an Investment Banker, CEO of a company, Corporate Lawyer, CTO, CFO, or an Accountant. </p>

<p>I really wanted to be a lawyer but I heard about the job field of a lawyer and the unavailability that comes when you finish going to law schools. I heard very sad stories and so that kind of scared me from becoming a lawyer.</p>

<p>Am I making the right choice? </p>

<p>I really want to go to NYU whether it is for Law School or Business School.</p>

<p>At first I was going to major in English and Business Administration or English and Accounting but I wasn’t sure about what to do.</p>

<p>If I did decide to major in Business Administration and Accounting, I might’ve minored in English or Mathematics or Philosophy.</p>

<p>I’m working my butt off to have good grades and my extracurricular are pretty good right now. I’m a senator for my class.</p>

<p>I’m unclear about the purpose of the double major. What does the NYU ‘Business Administration’ major offer if you want to be a CEO, investment banker, CFO, or accountant that you couldn’t get just by majoring in accounting? You can do all of those things with just an accounting degree; and honestly, by the time you make it to the level where a C-Suite job like CEO or CFO is important no one is going to care about your undergraduate major all that much.</p>

<p>I’m not saying it’s a bad idea, I’m just concerned that you will be doing all of that extra work for no reason.</p>

<p>Oh ok. So you think that accounting alone is just fine? Ok. I’ll probably do that then. </p>

<p>So Business Administration is pointless then?</p>

<p>I originally wanted to major in Accounting and Economics but I found out that my school only offers Economics as a minor.</p>

<p>For the jobs you listed, the accounting degree is an excellent choice (recognizing you would need substantial IT experience to become a CTO), If you plan to become a CPA, then an MS in Accounting makes sense.</p>

<p>As for grad or law school, you still have time to make decisions.</p>

<p>As for courses outside of your major, take things that interest you. I never thought to myself, I wish I took an extra finance, marketing, or accounting class. (I have an MS in accounting.) Also, things like Poli Sci and English will help you with your writing skills.</p>

<p>Ok. I decided to major in Business Administration with a concentration in Economics and then I majored in Accounting. </p>

<p>If that’s what you want, that should be fine. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing both majors, I just don’t think that it necessarily adds any value. Well, it might help with meeting the new 150 credit hour requirement.</p>

<p>I might also want to open up a business one day so that’s why I added Business Administration.
I went to my advisers about the accounting and business administration major and they compared them for me and they told that that they think it was an excellent idea for me to double major with those two majors.</p>

<p>If my school had an Economics major, I would’ve double majored in Accounting and Business Admin but economics is only available as a minor. So I just went with Business Admin with a concentration in Economics and then Accounting as my second major.</p>

<p>I agree with the others who said that the business administration won’t add a lot of value to an accounting degree but if you want to do it, there is certainly no harm in it. And be aware that if you want to go the CPA route you will need 150 credit hours (most undergraduate degrees are about 120 credit hours).</p>

<p>For what you said you want to accomplish, the accounting major will be more valuable than the BA major with econ concentration.</p>

<p>Ok, so I found out that I am not allowed to double major in Business Administration and Accounting. So I guess i’ll just go with accounting. </p>

<p>I wanted to major in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Mathematics or a Science major but my school took away Computer Science/Information Systems for some reason so I can’t major in those anymore unless I did those classes at another college or left this college completely.</p>

<p>The college that I go to is a small liberal arts college.</p>

<p>I guess it could be. The accounting advisor at my school told me that I should major in Accounting and then minor in economics. I think I might do that but add Political Science as another minor. So I’d have a major and two minors.</p>
