Business Admission: what is taken into account?

Grades of course, but what else?

Recommendation letters? Job history? Extracurricular activity? Entrance essay (if there is one required)?

I'm asking because I'm from Canada (eh) and the system up here is pretty much just grades.

You don't apply to the business school straight out of undergrad. First, you apply to one of Berkeley's colleges (mostly likely L&S). After two years or so, when you declare your major, that's when you apply to the business school.

For undergrad admissions they look at (in order of importance):

GPA

In-state residency

SATs

SAT IIs

Essays

ECs

Rigor of courseload

For undergrad business admissions they look for this:

50% is for grades in prereqs
25% is for essays
25% is for ECs, recommendations, etc.

I think that's how they split it up.....

check out haas' undergrad admissions website. it's self-explanatory.

<a href="http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/applying.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/applying.html</a></p>

just to correct vicissitudes,

it's

50% grades & coursework, 35% essays, and 15% ECs. NO letters of rec. just references in your resume, i believe. Correct me if i'm wrong, please.

<a href="http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/application.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/application.html</a></p>

Thanks!

I'm a little confused about this. So you can't apply to HAAS directly, you have to apply to undergraduate admissions in letters first yes?

But I'm in canada right now and have already completed 30 credits in Business administration and pretty much have all the requirements done.....Do I apply to letter or directly into HAAS?

are you coming in as a freshman or a transfer student?

Transfer student I would assume. I only completed one year but it still counts I think.

<a href="http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/applying.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/applying.html</a>
Have you looked at this website? It has all the information for continuing Cal students and for transfers. In any case you still wouldn't apply directly to Haas.

The website is indeed helpful but because Im from Quebec our system is a bit screwey (high school: 5 years, college: 2 years: University(current): 3 years) so i dont actually know what category I fall into

Oh yeah, that sounds about right. The Haas workshop I attended was a long time ago.

So usually, Berkeley only accepts junior-transfers in which case they directly apply to Haas. Since you've only done one year and 30 credits, it seems to me like you would apply to L&S and then have to apply to Haas (like all the other Haas-hopefuls) after you finish your second year. You might want to try calling admission though; this situation is a bit screwy.

Thanks. I'll send them an email tonight. I'd like to avoid long-distance if possible.

Though if I did a second year up here (bringing me to 60 credits) would that make me a junior- i.e qualify me for admission directly into Haas?

Which is easier to get into for an international student do you think? L&S or Haas?

I think as an incoming junior, you will have a better shot at L&S than Haas, but you might have a better shot at getting into Haas as a junior from your college than getting into Haas after spending a year at Berkeley (because then you'd be competing with Berkeley students and not transfer students).

i am an architecture major incoming freshman, is it possible for me to give it a shot during second year? does that mean i need to take a lot of courses since i need to satisfy two majors breadth and prerequisites? or i should just minor in business (is that even possible)?

I would probably apply to both, haha. If they take me into HAAS then yipee; if not Id go into L&S.

My GPA is in the above average rank; nothing spectacular but doesnt suck either. Even though the breakdown says that they dont pay much attention to my the SATs in my case; do you think I should still do them?

Like I said theyre not a part of the education system here but for 250$ you can do the official version of them at a local college. Worth it?

Am I allowed to apply as a 3rd year student or is it strictly for 2nd year students?

I know the answer to that one; 60 credits or less completed. So if you're in 3rd year with less than 60 creds you're ok.

But my question (post #13) is still unanswered :(

I think you can only apply to one.

If you're applying as a junior transfer I don't think they care about SATs at all.
