So I'm going to be attending UC Berkeley in the fall, and originally I had planned to double major in Applied Mathematics and Business (assuming I get into Haas). I was wondering how useful this combination would be in the real business world? My original thinking was that the quantitative aspect of business was becoming more important and that people with quantitative backgrounds would have an easier time for being hired. So the applied math aspect would help me in that regard vs just a degree in business/finance. But is the applied math itself very applicable on the job? I don't want to spend 4 years learning all this high level math only to not have it be useful on the job itself. Would another quant major be better, or is my whole original plan/thinking flawed.

“business + math = industrial engineering, operations research”

I agree totally with this. I have a MS in Operations Research and I can tell you there are tons of jobs out there for this fields.

I recommend you go either Industrial Enginering, Operations Research or Engineering Management, you can’t go wrong with it and will land a job in no time. Take some finace courses as electives if you want.

It will depend on what part of Operations Management you are concentrating. Operatios Research go hand in hand with OM but I concentrated in the Military and Government. If you are doing something with logistics and flow of sources the market is very good out there at least in the government(and by goverment I mean all companies working as contractors, not just the government). I don’t know if you have heard of Lean SiX Sigma, but it’s the type of certificationthat most companies die for. Just think that Six Sigma is a crash course of a MS in OR or OM, companies are dying for people like us that can benefit their companies in so many ways. My last job I was not even interview, they guy called me and told me if I had a MS in OR and I said yes, he told me to go work for the company since they were looking for OR guys and we were so hard to find. Thats the best thing of our field we are only very few and everyone needs us :)

I really haven’t even thought about a focus for my career yet. i’m active duty military now and I’m taking advantage of my education benefits (the entire MS should cost me less than about $1500 including books). i loved the idea of operations management and the university of arkansas is one of the schools offering in class master’s degrees here on my base. i guess i’m looking for validation in my degree choice.

Prior military plus a MS Degree in OM or OR is killer combo for the industry. I’m military too, just on the Reserves now and companies still call me even I hid my resume from them. The jobs are out there but not so easy to land everywhere. The capital region is flooded with job offerings, but anywhere theres a base there might be jobs there too.

So now I’m looking deciding between a second major in either OR, Statistics, or Applied Math (which I can have a concentration in Stat or OR). I do want the business degree from Haas. Which of these second majors do you think would be best if I wanted to eventually go into finance/investment banking?
