business/econ undergraduate school?

hi, i'm sure you've seen a lot of these but i'd really appreciate it if you guys could help me out a lil cos my case is kinda different. i'm white, live in VA, go to what's supposed to a be a top public hs.... and i wanna go to business school.

gpa's- freshman- 2.7, soph.- 3.3, junior-3.9,
current courseload- AP Calc BC, AP comp sci AB, public speaking, hons independent study in population growth. have 95 or above (unweighted) in all of them.
SAT1- 800M, 750V
SAT2's- 800 MathIIC, 760writing, 750spanish, 800bio, 790 physics, 790chem.
AP's- 5's on stats and macro/micro economics.
EC's: Student Council-president, Math Honors Society, Economics club(president), Interact- treasurer (this is where all the hot girls are lol), Red Cross, Peer mediator, voluntary work at a blind rehab center and varsity baseball- not good enough to be recruited though.
rec's: i think they're going to be very good; one teacher and my counselor are going to going to talk about my "transformation" cos i used to have a drug abuse problem (that's why my grades were so low freshman year), another one from my ap econ teacher from last year(i know him really well, got the highest grade in his class and founded the economy club at our school).

apart from the obvious ones i have no idea which ones are matches or reaches etc. heres the ones that i already applied to...

UVA
NYU
U-Mich Ann Arbor
Carnegie Mellon
UPenn
UofChicago
Columbia
Northwestern
MIT... yeah i know i prolly wasted 60 bucks applying but my mom did 8 years of engineering there so i might have a 1% chance :-)

now, am i gonna be in for UVa (remember i'm in-state) or do i need to apply to a safety like IU-Bloomington? how much are my bad fresh and soph grades going to matter?

Michigan does not even look at Freshman grades, so you have a great chance there. I would say that Michigan is a safety for a candidate with your circumstances and credentials.

You have a good chance at all the schools you applied to. Your SAT is awesome, your SAT II are also great. And your 5s in your APs suggest you are very ready for college level material. Plus, you have an exponential incline in grades, and colleges love to see that. However, your poor grades Freshman year and average grades Sophomore year could raise some eyebrows. So there are no guarantees. But I would be seriously surprised if you did not get into Michigan because they do not look at Freshman grades.

Personally, I think you are in at all the schools you applied to...even MIT....provided you wrote good essays.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Likely you will get in to more than one of the ones you list although I would not call any of them safeties because of your GPA. Also note that UChicago has no business undergrad program. It has one of the best economics programs but too often college applicants believe an economics program and business program are the same thing. The two are widely different.
