Business/Econ

Is the Business/Econ class in UCLA any good? I might attend this school with Business as a major...

I believe it is, and I will be studying there in the coming Fall

For the 23823423049283th time, there's no business major at ucla. Business-Econ is pretty much just econ+accounting.

Is Business/Econ the course to take if i want to become a investment banker?

Don't go to UCLA if you seriously want to go to I-banking. Ivy's and Stanford is where all the action's at.

I heard bus/econ was cut throat. However there are other options such as International Econ and just plain econ. Business @ UCLA is not the best, I say its so so.

You seem very well informed. You have nothing but a bright future ahead of you...

Re: Toby
I would say Bus/Econ in LA relatively concerntrate in Finance (the program offer classes such as investment, finance, public finance, international finance, financial statement anaylysis ...) I compared those courses with other Bus_Finance concentration program, and I saw that is not a really big different. If you want to be really well prepared to be an investement banker, you can take 2 or 3 additional classes through UC extension (cost additionally about 2-3 thousands after you graduate). Good luck.
To Yahoo: it's not true that "Ivy's and Stanford is where all the action's at." Ivy is not the only choice nor the best choice for all people.

For IB it usually is the best choice.

If you really want IB you shouldn't come to UCLA, unless you didn't get in anywhere that gives you better opportunities. That being said I don't think you have a clue in hell what you're (OP) talking about and I doubt you have any idea what IB is except you heard they make a lot of $$ (in the past) and watched American Psycho a couple of times.

LaxAttack09,

It's pretty much true that I don't know much about investment banking. But it's not just because of IB that I want to major in Business. Someday when I earn enough money, I'd like to start some business of mine too. I just don't want my paycheck to be determined by someone else for the rest of my life, ya know?

So, if UCLA doesn't provide a good Business class, what other universities do? Note that I prefer a large university with exciting dorm rooms. :D

uhhh... I think Laxattack haven't been at UCLA, right ?

You're not going to learn how to run a business by taking classes in college. UCLA biz-econ is fine, a great program, just don't expect that golden doors into the world of IB will open for you.

Well... Obviously it's not the best choice for everyone, but in terms of I-banking, those are the schools that provide the greatest opportunities.

Why doesn't UCLA just open the floodgates and declare a Business major?

if you want to do ibanking from ucla, major in math, math/econ, physics, or EE

if you want to be an accountant, do bizecon

if you want to go to MBA/Law/Medical school, major in whatever you want

of course there are exceptions, but im basing this on the MANY people i know in bizecon and the many people i know in ibanking.

Thx for LaxAttack09's information as well as others', I will experience it myself in the comming 2 years. By the way, is Lax still in LA ? if so, I can meet you there lol
TO bruin boy: Did I get it wrong? Physics, and EE for Ibanking ?

math = good

Today I overheard someone saying that UCLA will have a business minor by 2009... Hmmm

hey, just found out something, I think you guys are not in Biz Econ so you don't know what is the different between Bizecon and Econ. There is some mistaking that BizEcon = Econ + Accounting like Lax said before, but it's not really true. there are 7 Econ 106_ courses that are only reserved for Biz_ Econ student. Although those courses are called econ, but they are mostly about Business( Financing, Marketing, and management).
To Lax: I think good at Math doesn't equal to good at IB !!! especially for a physics science major !!!!!!!!!! (need to have solid knowledge in Econ/bus to analyze the numbers). At least so far I don't see any one major in Physics take an Econ class
To Yahoo: that's would be great if the school open a Biz minor, that mean I will have more Biz classes to take lol ( hopefully)

The reason why engineering/physical science majors get picked up by the Ibanking crew is because of three reasons

1) Engineering is brutal, if you survive it with a high GPA, enough said. If you graduate with a degree in engineering, you're a masochist and you won't mind the long hours in Ibanking.
2) Engineering gives you the fundamentals of analysis and insight.
3) Engineering has basis in solving problems, that's what you do for a living as an engineer.

Google "engineer ibanking"

I don't know about you but as a chemical engineer, I have to analyze numbers all the time, from a technical and economic standpoint.

Technical:
What's my volume of my reactor, residence time, flow rates, etc, and what does it mean?

Economic
What's my rates of return, payback period, net present worth, etc - "Is my biodiesel plant in the red?"
