I am currently a Junior transfer student at UCSB declared as a Business/Economics major. I am embarking upon my quest for an internship. I am wondering what kind of internships people typically get as a Bus/Econ? My roommate is declared as an Economics and Accounting major and it just seems like such an easy and direct path toward an internship and career as he just landed an internship with Ernst&Young. I am considering Marketing as a good place to start in for a career.

I know for the Big Four, they have a lot of reps come out to UCSB and hire a bunch of students. Is there anything similar to this for students who are Bus/Econ, but not accounting?

There are still people who declared the full major and have not graduated yet (like me), so there will still be Business Economics majors around for a few more years, I would think.

Anyway, the Economics department set up a blog to help with finding internships, though there still is a lot of accounting stuff on the site:

Make sure you used Gaucholink and career services to try to find something!!! So many people don’t use those services and they’re a great way to start!

Gaucholink never really did anything for me as a Business Econ w/ Accounting major…bunch of interviews but nothing came out of it (bad economy coupled with very competitive students). However, my friend and I did get good leads from the career fairs…we went to the fall, winter and spring ones consistently. We both graduated last spring and now are both employed full time, my friend with the federal government and me as an analyst in a world renown institution. Call it good luck or persistence but the career fairs are a good way to go. Although at this point, I would suggest explore everything.

My son is a pre-econ major and I just came back from an Involved Parent luncheon hosted by Chancellor Yang. There are several things that you can do. First, have you checked with Econ Advising to see if any internships have been posted? Second, have you thought about doing the summer UC/DC internship program? There are some business internships available. Third, do you know about the Technology Entrepreneurship Certificate program through the School of Engineering? It is open to all UC students (I heard at the luncheon, it is going to become a minor at UCSB) It has many business classes. There is an Entrepreneurship club that brings in speakers at lunch and they have great networking opportunities.

I am not sure what your home town is, but there are websites that advertise summer internships. Qualcomm has awesome summer internships in San Diego. I saw an internship advertised for upper classmen. They are interviewing now, so if you are interested, go to the website and apply. Go to the Qualcomm website and click internsships. Then click Human Resources. The Business internships will appear. You can email me privately for more info.
