First off, I'm interested in business/finance, but economics is a bit boring for me. Can you please explain 1) the courses we'll be taking if we're pre-Bus./Econ. ? 2) Do we need to be naturally good at math in order to do well in the courses required for this major ? 3) Would you say Bus/Econ. is one of the more difficult majors ? I also know UCLA has a Business Economics/Intl. Studies program. Since I like languages and would like to work overseas one day, would you recommend this major over Business Economics ? Any pros/cons to either major ? Any input would be much appreciated.

Sorry guys, I just checked. It's not Business Economics/International Studies. Instead, it's Economics/International Studies. Now, I'm really confused! I want more of a business-y curriculum (as opposed to sole economics), but with some international studies infused too! argh...

Hi!
For Bus/Econ classes its mostly Econ + Management (which is accounting) and as for math requirements, it is only up to Math 31B which is the same thing as Calc BC (if you get a 5 on the calc bc test, you dont have to take this class) so it isnt difficult at all IMO. Another math class you would have to take for this major is Econ 41 which is statistics based on Econ.

As for difficulty of the major, i would say it is moderate. It does have a required 3.3 (core courses only) required GPA to get into the major, if you dont meet it, most people just do a Economics major.

The 3.3 GPA requirement is the highest of all the Econ department majors, followed by a 3.0 GPA req for Econ/International Studies, then a 2.0 for just a Econ major.

As for being more "business-y" Bus/econ does have the advantage of being more well informed about financial management but thats just mostly accounting, which i myself wouldnt consider "business-y" because most people would think of "business administration" to be more business oriented, not accounting.

Compared to Bus/Econ, Bus/Int Stdy is less business oriented because of the lack of courses in financial management, but it is more geared towards a future abroad. In Bus/Int Stdy, you would have to pick a certain region that you are interested in and take that language up to the highest level (level 6) for a prereq. So in a sense it is really preparing you for going abroad.

There is also an option of just taking Bus/Econ + Minor in whatever culture/country you are interested in and that could be similar to having a international study part of wanting to do business abroad, but it all depends on you. Most Bus/Econ majors just pick up an Accounting Minor because you only have to add a few more classes to get the minor (a lot of the requirements overlap with the bus/econ major).

Heres the econ department website where you can look at all the majors + their requirements:

Hope i helped!

It is possible to major BizEcon, minor in Japanese, and study abroad as well?

vc128, thanks for the informative post. You said that Bus/Econ requires some accounting courses, but from what i've read from other posts, accounting is something one should avoid due to its difficulty. Would you say this is true?

sooskay - It is definitely possible. Just make sure to talk to an econ counselor and set up a schedule for the next years. Also be sure to schedule yourself so that in case you don't get a class you have a back up. As long as you have a direction and know what you need to do, you'll be okay. =)
