Okay, so I know I want to do business/Microeconomics for investment banking. I have good analytical skills, Im good when under pressure(i.e good with risks). The thing is, Im bad at math, very bad. I hate and despise it. What area in the investment banking field will I be working in???

You don’t want to be a banker if you hate math, and frankly you probably wouldn’t get the grades you need in the courses you’ll need to get hired.

Yeah, but I doubt that everything in the field requires math. To be more clear, Im bad at calculus, geometry, trignometry and advanced algebra. Im not bad at basic arithmetic (adding, subtracting and basic algebra). Im just horrible at advanced math. does that help?

Bumpppppppppppppppp

Lobzz post #3 is hilarious

If you suck at math, you should probably reconsider your career choice. You’ve got to be joking though right…you expect to get a job in investment banking with elementary math skills such as addition and subtraction?

hhahaa no, What I meant was, Im good with “numbers and operations” just not advanced multivariate calculus/ Linear Algebra/ 6th dimensional trignometry(if that even exsists). Im just comfortable with basic math, not advanced math.

ok I understand what you are saying. you are not that good at “engineering type math”. Even if these advanced math courses aren’t exactly required for the job, keep in mind that you have to better than everyone else since the competition for such jobs are fierce. Lacking advanced math courses may put you at disadvantage when it comes to other applicants.

Your the same as me.

Look at commercial banking.

Whoa. I guess thats the exact wording (literally of what I meant) “commercial banking”.

is that part of investment banking though?

You’re being totally unrealistic. There are hundreds of kids who want every banking job. No one is going to hire one with weak math skills for any job in an ibank that’s under the umbrella of ibanking.

to what extent do bankers need math skills? i mean to say is there ever a time you’re going to be sitting in your office at Goldman working out a Taylor Series

We’re not talking world class quant skills for most jobs, but not having an easy read of graphs and ability to crunch numbers with the best will be an issue.

^^ Alright, that’s kinda what I figured. I like math to an extent but once I started getting into these Calc 2 concepts I started questioning how in the world someone would use these things in a banking job. Anything past Calc 2 seems irrelevant to banking (but I wouldn’t know), though I’m sure there’s a few select concepts that can be applied to valuation models and stuff?

“to what extent do bankers need math skills? i mean to say is there ever a time you’re going to be sitting in your office at Goldman working out a Taylor Series”

Not everything you learn in college will be applied directly to your job.
