I’m planning on applying to a lot of STEM schools, with the intent of majoring in something like Industrial Engineering or Engineering Management, where I can use engineering, business, statistics, and science principles to solve problems.
However, my ECs, although quite impressive, tend to lean quite a bit towards business and finance stuff. Would the lack of STEM-related ECs and awards/competitions (like robotics, Intel/Siemens, etc.) hurt my chances? I’d really appreciate any insights.
Do you consider your interest in business related to your engineering interests? If you can tie those together in your application essays and explain why they’re interrelated in your approach to the subjects, I think that would probably be really helpful in making your application more cohesive.
@Srabookworm basically I want a more technical, scientific approach to business and management. So actually, I’d say vice versa: My engineering interests suit my goal of pursuing business.
Ah, gotcha. Well since the majors you’re looking at seem geared toward what you’re describing as your own interest, , I imagine that as long as you talk about the relationship between your influence in these subjects and can still show strong ability in STEM fields through your academics, then you ought to be fine. It may help make you a more interesting applicant since you know you want to go into a particular field with your engineering knowledge that’s a bit different from the norm.
