Hi!

I am an aspiring Communications or Journalism major, but my mom says that neither of those are practical in this day and age, and that I need a business major. Now, finance or economics just don't seem like fun to me- whereas a political communications or magazine journalism class does. I agree with her for the most part, but I have one question: Is there any college where the dreary business courses are fun and engaging?

Thanks mucho!

I think my business classes have been fun and engaging for the most part, though you have to be somewhat interested in what you are learning when you are dealing with the particularly heavy quant moments, but it’s the quant that puts you in such a better position than journalism to begin with.

I think most classes are going to be engaging at a good university, but sometimes the material is only fun to me because I’ve wondered how they did something or didn’t even consider that they did something and what I’m learning explains the why and how.

At the top programs, there will likely be a lot of group projects and opportunities to be creative or even double major in something in communications. For example, the BHP program at Texas is taught with MBA-style coursework and it’s not uncommon for a student there to double major in the communications school, which is also well-regarded in its field.

All business is fun. It’s about making money.

If you don’t think it’s fun you might not do well. It can be dry if you cannot put it in context. Particularly business statistics and some accounting. I personally fall asleep anytime I study insurance.

As a whole, I love business.
