I’m trying to decide between these two majors. The Business Information Systems major is part of the College of Business at my school while the Information Systems Analyst is part of the IT Department. While looking through the coursework for each major I notice that the BIS major has a lot of courses that are listed under accounting in the school catalog. Obviously the Information Systems Analyst is heavy in the IT courses. Basically which degree will hold more value once I’ve graduated? Will a company be more inclined to hire the IT major over the BIS major? What degree will I learn more about computers from?
Is Info Systems Analyst really the major and not a job title? Can’t believe how many specific IT/IS degrees there are these days.
From my experience hiring IT folks over the years (and being hired myself), most employers are interested in your skills and experience. They care more that you have a degree, less what specifically it is. There are some exceptions for the big name companies, but this will be true for most companies.
Pick the major that lets you get the skills you want and lines you up best with the internships you would like. The BIS degree will have additional business classes, like accounting, but these can be of some value. I suspect there is less of that for the IT dept degree but they would have more technical classes. Either can be good depending upon what you want to do.
