Business Major and Pre Med?

So i am positive i want to do pre med in college. The question is what major to do. I could go the easy route and do what every other pre med student does and just do a biology major. But right now in AP Biology in high school, i do not like certain aspects of it such as ecology. Although i am very good at Biology and interested in many aspects of it, i do not think i could make a career just out of biology. If for some reason i do not end up going to med school i need a reliable major to fall back on to get a job. Although i have been thinking hard about biotechnology and molecular medicine majors, i have also thought about a business major.

I have thought about a business management, finance or health administration major. I do like being the leader and i could see myself being in a management position one day but my parents don't have a business that they will hand down to me one day. I know the job prospects are good in finance and i am a VERY strong math student. The one part of math that i can't understand for my life is stats… Is that something very important in a finance major? Will i be miserable doing a finance major if i HATE statistics? And that leads me to a health administration major. As i was saying before, if i don't go to med school i could always be a part of the board of directors or something like that of a hospital. Or i could be a doctor and also be part of the board as a part time job or something. I have very good leadership qualities and communication skills thats why i was thinking about a business major. Also i could still end up doing some sort of a science major with a business minor. What would most beneficial for me?

If anyone has any suggestions for me that would be awesome! I want to figure out what major would be best for me. Once i figure out what major i want to do, i can start looking at colleges i like and see what colleges are best for the major i am looking for. Thanks Everyone!

Long story short: Any major is “good” for medical school.

Long story: Med schools (and dent and pharm schools) don’t care what your major is. Most of them have a set of Pre-requisite science classes you need to take for admission, but other than that you can do what you want. Say you majored in Art History, all you would have to do is take the medical pre-reqs (Biology I & II, Chemistry I & II, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Calculus).

From here med schools look at several things: your cumulative GPA (what GPA you got overall in your classes) your science GPA (grades you got for those specific pre-reqs) and your MCAT scores (test covering all of those science subjects). If all of these are good, you’ll most likely be admitted. So major in whatever you want that interests you as long as you get good grades in your Pre-req classes and get a good MCAT score.

PS: The advice above applies to all Professional schools (Dent, Med, Pharm, Podiatry, etc). For medical school specifically, maybe consider a Business major if you want to go into a specialty where you will run your own practice.

Also, check out the SDN (Student Doctor Network) Forums! They’re a great place for any questions you may have in your medical journey. My username is BioBeaver on there!

Thanks! I think im going to apply for business majors at some of the harder schools i apply to, so i can try to get a good GPA for my major

hey! i know this forum i old but i am in the EXACT same position as you right now…(High school junior trying to make a college list based off major) similarly, i also am very good in math and not rlly a fan of statistics as well… soooo my question is what schools did you apply to and where did you end up going?? do you like it? are you going to stick the pre-med track and go in to medicine or do business full time? thanks a bunch!

Im a senior right now so Im applying. I am shooting to go to Vanderbilt because of a specific major I really loved there. It’s called Medicine, Health , and Society. It was so cool when I heard about it and I recommend looking into it! Im a very extroverted person and because it is in the college of arts and sciences i know it would not be that hard to add a double major or a minor in a hard science such as bio or chem. If i don’t get into Vanderbilt, I don’t really know exactly where I want to go. I decided to go with medicine and maybe a Cognitive science major would be more for me at other schools. Ill let you know what happens after the whole process!
