Admission is pretty tough. Great facilities and expanding reputation. Excellent placement for Midwest and some nationwide. Has not placed much in NYC mostly due to lack of interest in going there but that may be changing some. Accting, investments, marketing, insurance/actuary, and real estate investment mgt all very good.

Barrons’ words bear repeating: “Admission is pretty tough.” Many, many students go to UW hoping to major in business but aren’t admitted to the program despite good academic records after the freshman year. It happened to my son. Beware. If you’re going to UW for business, make sure you have a Plan B just in case.

Yes, my daughter is deciding between U W Madison and U of Iowa Business. U of Iowa she was direct admitted with honors but U of Wisconsin you apply when you are a sophmore. On the website it had a 66% admittance. I guess does anyone know about the U of Iowa Business? How does it fare? I know that their MBA is 20 th ranked, but want to know about the undergraduate.

Now at UW you apply in Spring of Freshman year for entry as a soph. Still about 65-70% chance. Some freshmen will get a direct admit. Maybe 20 or so this year.

Although Iowa isn’t considered to be as impressive as UW-Madison your DD can still be successful if she receives a degree from Iowa. My husband graduated from Madison’s School of Business in the 80’s and is successful. We live in the Chicago area and know many, many people who graduated from Iowa at the same time who are very successful in business.

If she has been admitted to the School of Business/Honors program at Iowa and likes the school then she should do well academically. In today’s business world an undergraduate degree isn’t enough, she’ll need to go to grad school.

Chicago businesses recruit from all of the Big 10 schools, I’m not sure about East or West coast businesses. Also, personality and how one presents him/herself is almost as important as where they graduated from. If an employer interviews a WI grad and an IA grad at the same time and the IA grad is more engaging and personable, guess who gets the job?

Wisconsin has a great business school so if your DD loves Madison more than Iowa City then she should take her chances. If it’s a tie then she should really think carefully about the risk of not getting accepted to Madison’s B school.

There’s also the possibility of transferring to Iowa if she finds getting into UW’s B school isn’t working and she wants that more than the school.
