I am starting community college in the Spring, and I am majoring in business, more on the Marketing side. I don't really like math so I'm wondering if I should change my major to something that involves less math or if the math in Marketing is not extensive.

A business marketing major is usually not too heavy on the math. Look up the requirements for the school you plan to transfer and then you can determine if the math is too much for you or not.

I am a business major who is finishing up a bachelor’s degree program. I actually hate math. I would say the program is heavier on math than most liberal arts (except for economics) and lighter on math than any science subject. What matters too is what your concentration is. I would rank the business concentrations from most to least math heavy like so:

Statistics, Accounting, Finance, Business Economics, Economics, Operations Management/SCM,
Business Administration, Marketing, MIS, International Business, and finally, HRM.

I chose business administration as a major but my list of available concentrations was limited. I will get through my BSBA program without having to take any calculus classes; I have taken both college algebra and finite math. College algebra was the tougher of the two. While the math in business majors isn’t insurmountable it is lots of multiplication with algebra and formulas to recognize, especially for accounting and econ. I agree that marketing is a concentration that has less math. Don’t shy away from a business program just for that reason though. I have never seen calculus in my life. The highest math level I ever reached is the college algebra class that I passed.

Your biggest rival in a business program is accounting. It is RIDICULOUS. When professors say “financial accounting will be unlike any other class you’ve taken” they are telling the truth. The first two accounting classes are more likely to hinder your progress in the program than the statistics class(es). Business is a great major! Do what you wish though because if you don’t you’ll be miserable in college. If you find the math too much you could choose something else like a foreign language (not Chinese, Japanese, or Latin), political science, sociology or music. Any of the culture studies majors like European studies or classical studies are fine IF you are getting the degree for personal reasons instead of for employment reasons.

Don’t major in psychology, women’s studies, or history though. There’s no point as they are all useless. Anyways good luck with your future college career! I hope you enjoy what will be a great chapter in your life.
