Hi I am just wondering why a lot of people say to major in economics in a school's college of arts and sciences instead of going to their business school. business schools seem to be more competitive than the unviersity's liberal arts college and have a higher starting salary. so why do econ over business?

If you are accepted to an ivy league school that doesn’t offer business, economics is the good choice. In 98% of other schools that offer a college of business and economics major in the college of arts and sciences, the business program will get you a better job.

Economics is a different field than business administration. If you want to be a manager, then yeah, you should major in business. If you want to be a financial, economic, or policy analyst, I think economics would serve you better.

Some people just like economics better than business in general.

Get an arts degree then work a few years, then get an MBA. I’m a bschool professor. I honestly don’t know any bschool professors that would encourage their kids to get an undergrad in business.

starbright: why not get an undergrad degree in business as well because it is easier to find a job and work for those few years plus the pay is better due to statistics

I’m pretty sure majoring in finance would help you be a financial analyst better than economics and I’m pretty sure majoring in public policy would be better than economics to be a public policy analyst.

Don’t get me wrong, economics is a very versitile degree, but it is absurd to think that majoring in economics would help you deal with another business area better than majoring in that area itself.

unless you’re looking at Penn or MIT, I recommend going for economics. business is generally considered a joke major.

How do the people who consider business as a joke major, suggest getting into the business world, then?

i guess the “joke” major earns more money after graduation and is more sought out for…?

I guess the majority of college kids are studying “joke” majors now too.

My dad is a Wharton guy and he admits that he applied to all of his other schools as a physics major. Look at college basketball/football guys. They’re usually majoring in business because of its ease. I would suggest majoring in math, physics, chem, economics, engineering, or statistics and then going for an MBA.

Well Choklit, getting an MBA can be very expensive and I would like to have a job in the business world before i get an MBA, and I’m pretty sure that the easiest way would to be to go through business school. I’m probably going to double major though, most likely business and math.
