Business Management or Accounting?

Potential Career Aspirations: Financial Analyst, Stockbroker, Any Finance Related Career Investment Banker, Lawyer, Sports Agent

I'm currently majoring in Business Management with a Minor in Economics. I attend Penn State University's Smeal College of Business.

I definitely plan on going to Grad School to get a MBA or to Law School.

Obviously I wont become an Investment Banker, A Sports Agent or a Lawyer right after College, so i want to be able to get a stable finance related job after graduation for a few years before i go into Grad School.

My problem is I dont feel a Management degree will have the same career opportunities as Accounting and Finance. Please note I DONT WANT TO BECOME AN ACCOUNTANT.

My questions are:

Do you feel an Accounting degree limits me to just being an accountant. If no, what are some other careers i can go into with an accounting degree?

Is Business Management a waste of a degree at Penn State's Smeal College of Business?

What possible careers are out there for those graduating with a Business Mangement degree?

Ask yourself…what do you plan on managing straight out of college with no experience? Target? Maybe Whole Foods produce?

An accounting degree doesn’t ALWAYS limit you to being an accountant but, shockingly, most businesses would want you for your accounting knowledge.

I liked how you emphasized it. lol

lol @ Toshtemirov. I would like to hear your input on this too.

So do you feel an accounting degree would still be of great value even if i dont want to become an accountant?

I think it would give you a better understand of the business operations you would be “managing” However, remember that it’s going to be more difficult curriculum…

Right now in upper division accounting classes I am studying/doing homework WAYYYY more than I ever thought I would. This is while my management major roommate is seeming to have a much more laid back senior year class load.

bump. please still looking for honest input

Study Finance.

Finance people mainly come from top schools and finance programs. If you really don’t want to do accounting, don’t do accounting.

You are not going to get into prestige obsessed business fields or top MBA schools with garbage work experience. You will get garbage work experience with a business administration/management undergraduate degree.

You need to go accounting/finance/econ.

You need to go accounting/finance/econ. "

Yes, because those are the only three fields that provide worthwhile work experience.

/sarcasm off

Given your career interests, Finance seems like a no-brainer.
