Business + Media Studies Double Major + PR Minor?

Helloooooooooo!
I am looking to major in Business with a concentration in marketing. I'm very interested in doing something in the entertainment industry, may it be a producer, executive, director public relations firm, advertising for films, etc. So, I think a Communcations major with an emphasis in Media Studies & Production, or just a Media Studies major (depending on what the school has) would be valuable. In addition, I'm also thinking of having a public relations or advertising minor. My questions are::

1) How does double majoring in business (with a concentration in marketing) and media studies sound for wanting to work in the entertainment industry as like some advertising/pr firm for film, producer, etc?
2) Would minoring in public relations or advertising be better? Or is there one that looks better to employers?
3) If, in the end, I realize that I don't want to work in the entertainment industry, I could always just use the business major (with a concentration in marketing) and/or the advertising/pr minor and work with a company on their marketing...right?

Thanks!! Any and all opinions are welcome!

It really doesn’t make a difference what you major in if you want to work in the entertainment industry.

I double majored in economics and political science and have interned at Time Warner, NBC Universal, 20th Century Fox and a few other places. Communications/Media studies is a useless major. Having met and worked alongside many of them it became abundantly clear none of them know anything more (and often much less) than I do about the entertainment and media industry. Just be smart, read Variety/Hollywood reporter, know who is who, what’s what and be sharp.

^^^ what i don’t understand is how these places let you be an intern. what i mean is, why would they chose you over the thousands of people who DO have business and/or media studies degrees? it doesn’t make sense how someone can just waltz up and get a job in the entertainment industry without having a degree in some area of study related to it. anyone could major in anything and then do any job they want then! employers want to see that there is experience and work done in the area too…

connections obviously…family connections perhaps? Or being an instate student in a spring/summer course at either UCLA/USC/NYU

btw media & comm is not a useless degree. well if you study it in the US perhaps, but not in London. Believe me i’ve compared the curriculums .

You have a lot to learn if you think an employer is looking only at the degree. They only care that you aren’t majoring in something so easy that As are given out like candy. Most importantly, especially in such a competitive industry, is connections. Your response makes me think you probably don’t have any connections, so I’d work tirelessly to make as many contacts as I could if I were you.

Communication is a joke at every school in the US. When I was studying abroad in UK I did meet a lot of communications majors, but they had 100% different curriculums.

brangelinaaa,

Are you attractive? If you want to work in marketing industry, then you MUST be good looking. Otherwise major in something else, like engineering or math, where people do not care about the looks.
