Business of Art and Design Major - any thoughts?

Hi,

I'm looking for advice on this major - The Business of Art and Design. You need an art background and interest but the program covers marketing, psychology and communication as well. It sounds like it could be a great fit for a kid who loves art but also loves event planning, community events and working with people.

Ringling offers a program - and I image there are other schools that do to.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

My D goes to MCAD in Minneapolis and they have a Bachelors of Science program that sounds it might be what you’re looking for. When we did a tour of the school, we met some students in the program, they kidded about how the BFA kids produced the work but the BS students made them famous!

[MCAD: Bachelor of Science Degree](http://www.mcad.edu/showPage.php?pageID=1081)

I got snail mail addressed to my kid, who did MICA pre college three summers ago. how they counted his age nor assumed what he is at now is besides the point, but here is what they now offer.
PMS, No, I have ESL dyslexia, it is

MPS. Master in Professional Studies in the Business of Art and Design
here is the site
http://www.mica.edu/Programs_of_Study/MPS_Degree_Programs/The_Business_Of_Art_And_Design_(MPS).html</a></p>

14 month, online, skype, dim dim, web conference, presentation, short residency at MICA over weekends
you will get

 1. 30 credits
 2. skill on start sustain grow art or design business
 3. two path to choose from design/manager or creative artist/enterprenuer
 4. money smart
 5. ethics, pub speak and business writing skill
 6. blah blah

in the nutshell, it seems bumped up continuing education that cost arms and legs, but anyone could apply and learn such things by not even at the school. Newschool, NYU does bunches but this is supposedly the first that concentrate on the business of art and design.
If you love doing creating side of art, I feel better to do that solid college years and do business bit later?

PS
it made me feel warm and fuzzy for the recruit letter was (digi)signed by the same dean who called in person that summer to tell us they want to give him the pre college spot miraculously opened up in the last minutes. He wanted to do his school, and most of all, my kid the best he could do, which was really really touching.
It’s been two and half years and he is still there, doing the same. good to know that.

I think the Business of Art and Design is a good way to go, with many programs now offering a focus on that in addition to the traditional approaches. There is likely to be a robust computer media side of the program.

Parsons has a Design Management major but first year is fine art foundation the same as everyone else.
