Business or Engineering Major for Math Whiz

Does anyone have any advice on selecting between these two majors? My son is gifted in math, always taken accelerated math courses and done well. He just got his SATs back and got an 800 in Math. Many people have suggested he go into engineering, but he has no experience or exposure into the various types of engineering. He's not the kind of person who takes things apart and puts them back together, and he uses computers but doesn't write programs or create web sites. Instead, he is a sports nut and reviews, analyzes and memorizes sports statistics and can report on slugging percentages, on base averages, draft choices, etc. He's also done very well in his Honors Physics class with a 97 average.

This summer he's taking a one week course at Bentley College called Wall Street 101 to learn the basics of Finance and see if this interests him. Is anyone aware of any similar programs for engineering to expose students to the various disciplines to see if he's interested?

When going through the application process next fall he may apply to several schools that offer both engineering and business, so he might possibly be able to explore both options at that time. Lehigh, for example, allows students to take courses from both their engineering and business schools. But ideally he'd like to test drive the majors before applying. Any suggestions?

BTW, CR=600 and Writing=590. He's being tutored in these two and plans to retake in May. Also taking the ACT on 4/12. Bottom line: Very strong in Math, not going to be suited for a small liberal arts college majoring in Psychology or Journalism.

Sure. BS Engineering + MBA = Golden Ticket, IMHO. If he's a quant jock he can look for "Financial Engineering" programs...however, this is more prominent at the graduate level.

SHAD VALLEY would help your son so much... i just got accepted... if you'd like to contact me PM me and i can speak to your son rather than yourself because you want to get your son motivated and first step is for HIM to take initiative... But to sum it up, shad valley is a 1 month long summer internship program at 1 of 12 host campuses in Canada (offered to international students to dont worry) and it incorporates 3 sections- Business integrated with science and technology... with this your son will learn to combine 3 key aspect and will develop strong life time friendships with a close knit group of 48 kids per campus... he will be taught by PhD professors during the 1 month in various field, and will do hands on group projects and during this whole thing do a market/science/technology research abstract which will then be judged on (you do the project and compete with the other 11 campuses for SHAD cup... you develop the idea with a group of people and pitch the idea with a business plan/science abstract)

I just got accepted this year, and from what I have heard lots of top students do this and lots of TOP universities look into this program-MIT,Stanford- because it blossoms the idea of well-roundedness

And its good to see a your son enjoys math, try to get him now to spark that passion in the humanities/english courses lol... its great to be good at 1 thing, its better to be good at many things. :)

Hope that answers your question Sir, if youd like more ideas on other programs just PM me like i said and tell me more specifically-cost and other problems is necessary.

Just met with the guidance counselor this morning. He mentioned that some schools offer a 3/2 program where students get a BS in Engineering and MBA in 5 years. Is anyone aware of any good schools offering such a program?
