Do you recommend joining a business professional fraternity/sorority? Which one do you recommend?
I’m in an Honor’s Fraternity, which isn’t quite the same as a pre-professional fraternity but I assume they share some similarities. I absolutely love it; I’ve made my best friends here. I love that we aren’t just focused on the social aspects of a normal fraternity/sorority but also focus on scholarship and service to our community.
Research which fraternities are available at your school and check out some information sessions about any that interest you. You can always begin the rush process and see how you like it without ever committing to joining.
Hey,
I am in a professional fraternity so I can try and help. I DO recommend joining one if that is your thing; there are many other organizations/clubs you can take advantage of if not. I was always interested in fraternities, but I did not want to be hazed the way social fraternities haze their pledges. My experience thus far has been okay I guess. Here is the thing…
There is a pledge process which will be different for each fraternity obviously. Some might have you do strictly “professional” stuff like community service, fundraising, etc. Others might incorporate a more “social” vibe, i.e. drinking and what not. You’ll have your little fraternity secrets like traditions and what not, and it seems exciting when you’re pledging. Honestly though, after I crossed, I was completely uninterested lol. SOCIAL frats and sororities pride themselves on brotherhood and sisterhood, and while you can have this in a professional fraternity (them being coed), it isn’t the same I feel like. That’s another thing…
“Real” frats look at professional frats as if we suck haha. It’s because we wear Greek letters, but we’re not actually Greek (we are not a part of the inter greek council). Therefore we aren’t a “real” fraternity and no other professional fraternity is either. Also (and this could just be my fraternity), you will noticed that there is a TONNNN of drama.
On a positive note, it was a good resume builder! Haha, I guess it really just was not for me. It could be for you though! Just know that pledging does take time and dedication so prepare for that.
