so i've been looking at a few of the more competitive business programs, some of which require a seperate application after a year or two where a ton of people apply, and they obviously can't accept everybody. hypothetically, if your application was denied, are you screwed out of doing what your interested in? would it be better to go to a less competitive business program to assure that you could study what you wanted? thanks.

The standard advice of applying to X reach schools, Y match schools, and Z safety schools applies to every possible undergraduate major. You need to figure out what schools are reaches for you, what would be matches for you, and what would be safeties for you.

No, your life will not be over if you don’t get into fill-in-college-name-here instead of fill-in-other-college-name-here. There are scads of successful business people out there who studied what they wanted at “less competitive” schools. You can do that too.

UVA (#2 b-school by businessweek) has an acceptance rate of ~65%. I think Emory (#4) is ~70-75%. I think if you work hard and get your requirements out of the way, you should be fine. And NO, you won’t be screwed. Major in something else. Graduate. Get a job. Then, go back for an MBA. Undergrad B-school is not a necessity.
