Business School / Accounting ? Thoughts on Uof SC reputation, curriculum

My son is a potential 2024 Business Accounting major (accepted EA). U of SC is in his top 3 but we would love to get more information on what people’s experience is with the Business school. How well are students prepared for careers, how are U of SC Business grads thought of in the wider world of the East Coast and what is the 4 year experience of the Business student? Thank you.

My daughter just graduated in May from the business school with double majors in Accounting and Finance. She was also able to accelerate her Masters in Accounting and just graduated this week from that as well. Throughout her time at UofSC she had several internships with reputable companies which led to three job offers (2 in accounting and 1 in finance). She is starting her job with a top accounting firm in January and has already passed all four sections of the CPA. The teaching and guidance that she received from the Business school was invaluable and she has no regrets on any aspect.

This is great to know! My daughter was accepted to the business school for accounting. We’re from NY and were wondering the same as the OP.

Can’t speak to Accounting specifically, but my D (from Philadelphia suburbs) graduated in May with a International Business/Economics degree. She had an internship after junior year with a Philadelphia firm (many of the interns went to local schools, but several were from farther away than SC). She accepted a permanent position after graduation as a data analyst with a well-known company in New Jersey. Another new hire there is also from U of SC, but I don’t know her major or what state she’s from. My D had to hustle a bit more to find opportunities up here (the career center helped her find an internship in Columbia easily, but did not have much info on mid-Atlantic employers); but the U of SC name did not seem to be a deterrent.

Accounting is generally quite marketable, but you might have your business majors look into the Data Analytics concentration in the Moore School as an “extra” credential. D is pretty convinced that’s what got her the offer at her current employer.

The B school has a good reputation but it’s not as far reaching as other National Universities when considered in isolation. Couple the degree with a good minor, good grades, and a solid resume and you’ll be just fine (as others have indicated).

Darla Moore is very good at preparing students toward graduation and has many opportunities for students to excel and get great internships. I will say, however, that it really comes down to what the student wants out of it.

Many of my friends who have graduated (and are graduating) are working at Ernst and Young as well as Deloitte. At USC, you are extremely close to Charlotte, NC (one of the biggest banking cities in the USA) and many students from USC are recruited to work in Charlotte.
