Im looking into finance at a decent business school.. my top choice is nyu stern and i will ed 1 there.. looking at my prospects do you feel there are any other good business schools that focus a lot on finance, investment banking/hedge funds that are reasonable places for me to apply

School: Private School in Princeton, NJ (Hun School)
SAT (superscore): 2370 (800 in math, 800 in writing, 770 in critical reading)
i still need to take subject tests but NYU does not require subject tests
GPA: around a 3.6 to 3.7
course rigor: AP Calc AB and AP stat as a sophomore. This year as a junior i am taking AP Calc BC and AP Euro. Next year I will be taking AP Spanish, AP Art History, Multi-variable Calculus. I know it isnt like over the top but private schools arent the same as public schools when it comes to the rigor of ap classes. i got a 4 on ap calc ab last yr. my school doesnt offer ap econ but i have taken regular. and honors for my core non ap classes

EC:
-I am an SAT and math tutor
-I have my own non profit organization. i started it by myself. it is a registered company and everything that helps artisans that are in poverty, with this i have tons and tons of community service hours. i go to small villages in different countries to make this possible. (its kind of a big deal i think)
-I have played varsity tennis at my school and was ranked in the top 30 in the state.. i am probably gonna get an award for this year from my coach. (not getting recruited but i will still contact nyu head tennis coach)
-I played on the atlantic regional cricket team and we place 3rd in nationals. its kinda unique.

i will have strong essays. i have a lot to write about, and i am good writer.

haha this doesnt seem like too much compared to other kids on here.. but yeah that is what i have. im kinda banking on my SAT scores to take me far.

^^You wouldn’t apply to Kellogg cert until your sophomore year at NU. So it’s just about getting into NU first (or NU+MMSS; MMSS automatically fulfill the pre-reqs for Kellogg cert). Both MMSS and Kellogg are great for those that enjoy math.

NU admission is pretty holistic; a relatively low GPA won’t break you, esp. with strong essays.

Below are the top ten undergraduate business schools. I would keep NYU in there and apply to the top 10. NYU is a good safety school if you don’t get into any of the top 10.

To be fair, US News rankings aren’t very different. The top 10-15 schools seem pretty similar. You’re always going to have ND, Penn, NYU, BC, Cornell, etc. as the top 10-15 schools. A few will fluctuate but there is pretty much universal agreement over the usual cast of characters at the top.

Any ranking that doesn’t have Wharton at number one is suspect. Recruiting is prestige driven in business, probably more than almost any other undergraduate discipline. Ranking does matter a great deal! Besides that fact, BW rankings shift quite a bit every year. They also rely way too heavily on student satisfaction surveys, which are easily manipulated.

"“You’re always going to have ND, Penn, NYU, BC, Cornell, etc. as the top 10-15 schools.”

Not really… "

How about just Penn, NYU and Cornell – is that more like it, rjk? After all, I mean, gosh, there ARE certain absolutes in this world, aren’t there?!

^^If you don’t like absolutes in this world leanid, then just follow BusinessWeek’s rankings. After all, they change pretty dramatically most years.

BW is highly suspect. Not having Wharton on top seriously discredits it. And Sloan being ranked almost out of the top 20 is not very believable. Haas, Stern and Tepper are also ranked way too low. They are just too many inconsistencies.
