Business School

How hard is it to get into the Business school once at Maryland. As of now I was accepted as undecided.

Good question about switching schools or majors. Anyone?

Hi, so I know Smith and Kim are limited enrollment, and other majors might be too, but if it helps at all, I came into CP as a math major, and in september added business. At that point they said it was only a matter of paperwork, since I was still a 1st semester student, but it would be difficult later, then you may have to wait for junior year. and for requirements, I don’t know what they need for Smith, but I got in with a 4.6 w/3.9 uw GPA, 22 AP credits, and a 1490 on my SATs. But when i went to the meeting to switch, the guy was like, oh, you definitely have the stats. So maybe my stats are high, or average, I don’t know. But that’s what got me in as a freshman. Good luck!! hope you get in, van munching is totally the coolest building on campus, did you know all the windows are made from Heineken bottles cuz Van Munching is the sole US importer of heineken, or something like that? k, Go Terps, bye!

My stats are nothing similar to yours, my gpa frosh-jr yr is a 3.9 weighted but my gpa sr year is 4.3ish 1280 SAT

^need a 1300/1600 minimum to be in smith

To be admitted as a direct admit, or to be admitted once you are there?

to be admitted as a direct, once you are there, you have to reapply junior year

my question is how hard is it to get in when you apply junior year? What are the requirements?

Know of a 3.0 that got in and know a 3.7 that didn’t.

UMD had a workshop at accepted students day about how to transfer into the business school if you are undecided. Two ways to do that:

Do it before the last day of your first semester at UMD (and yes, they don’t mean on the last day, they mean before the last day). They will consider your application the same way they do as an incoming freshman. And you can still change your application now.

Do it for the semester after you have 60 credits. You must have a certain GPA (I think it was a 3.7 - very little flexibiity there, from what they said, they gave a case example of someone with a 3.69 who was not accepted) and there is an essay to write about why you want to be in the business school.

Also note, that you may be accepted into the other campus (Rockville) if you apply after 60 credits.

After hearing that, my S decided that there was no downside to applying to the business school now (you transfer out easier than transfer in), so he changed his application that day. He heard from them within a week and he was accepted. (He was accepted into their Honors Program, so he was pretty sure he would be accepted - 33 ACT & 3.7 unweighted GPA)

^^when i went, they said the minimum gpa needed was 3.0, not 3.7. that kind of minimum is absurd, but the people that they accept have 3.7s. Also, the internal acceptance rate into the business school is around 60% (not too good in my opinion).
