Hi! I know that UMich and UVA have undergraduate business programs in which the student must apply after their first year. I was wondering how likely the chances are acceptances, and how the best way to approach it is. I also realize that there is a Preferred Admissions for Exceptional High School students, which isn't exactly me, but it sounds interesting. It be would be nice to hear from current Ross and McIntire students! But I would also just like to get some opinions on other school options for undergraduate business programs? Please feel free to share any information you have on this!

A student at UVA applies to McIntyre during their second year and the program begins their 3rd year. It is very competitive with around a 60% admission rate. It is important to understand that many students self select out of applying so the applicant pool is quite strong. You can get detailed information directly from the McIntyre site. There is no Preferred Admission to McIntyre coming out of High School. The Ross program begins during their Sophmore year. My son received a Ross Preferred Admission from UMichigan. Although the Ross pre-admit was very tempting, he chose UVA and is hoping to get into McIntyre.

@MAsecondtimer Thank you! I really appreciate the info. May I ask why your son chose UVA? Maybe we have different circumstances considering I’m planning to pursue Accounting.

For sophomore admission at Ross, the acceptance rate is around 40% last year I think.

@billcsho what do you think i could do to improve chances? I mean, i’m still a high school senior, but i would like to have a plan ready hahah

How is your credential?

He really liked Michigan and could have been very happy there. But, he has always hoped to attend college in a warmer climate. Once he got accepted to schools in Mid-Atlantic and Southern states it pushed Michigan down the list. The Ross pre-admit was a big consideration but he went with UVA after much deliberation. That is where he was the most comfortable and as he said it is where he “got that feeling”. That being said, he had some schools where there was an undergraduate business school and others that did not and he would have been an Econ major.

Your SAT is on the low side and right at the 25th percentile of UMich overall. Also, can you calculate your uwGPA. For oos student, you chance at UMich is not good.

@billcsho do you think there’s any way to improve my chances at this point?

The '13-'14 Michigan common data set has the middle 50% of enrolled SAT at 1910-2210. Yes, the middle 50% will rise some for recently enrolled '14’s and next years '15’s, but, your 2150 is going to be well above the enrolled 25% level. I’m sure billcsho you are referring to admitted students, rather than enrolled but tarak664’s prospects are very reasonable even for OOS if his/her unweighted GPA is say 3.85 or above. What is your unweighted GPA?

Michigan’s 25th percentile SAT for enrolled freshman is a 1270, so yes billscho is wrong (not exactly a surprise based on previous discourse). I have doubts that the admitted freshman 25th percentile SAT is even at 1300.

OP: don’t underestimate your chances at UMich.

@wayneandgarth my UW GPA is at a 3.94 now. Does this mean I can consider UMich as a ballpark? I mean, I’ll definitely apply, but my biggest concern right now is (possibly) getting in, then not being accepted into Ross. I have other options, but UMich seems like a great fit for me

What are your career goals?

First, yes with those stats and a strong essay, your chances are good. Second, do not be frightened about not getting into Ross. You can do it with determination, focus and planning. Worse case, an Econ degree from Michigan is fabulous.

SAT-CR and SAT-M are both third quartile for Michigan. An unweighted GPA of 3.85 or higher would help, first-gen is probably a plus, and the fact that your GPA is rising over time helps, but this seems pretty reachy to me. Michigan’s overall admit rate this year was right around 33% but their in-state admit rate is around 50%, which means their OOS admit rate is likely well below 25%, possibly closer to 20%. Let’s put it this way: most OOS applicants with these stats aren’t admitted to Michigan, but some do get in. What can you do to help your chances? Re-take the SAT and score at least in the second quartile for Michigan (say 680+ CR and 710+ M; I’m not sure they even consider the W score, but you’re obviously fine there). Write some brilliant essays; they really like good essays. Ace your first semester of senior year. I wouldn’t submit those SAT Subject Test scores; Michigan doesn’t require them but they will look at them if you send them, and while they’re not terrible scores, they’re probably not strong enough to help you and might even hurt you a little. You can re-take if you’re confident you’ll get higher scores, but frankly upping your SAT-CR and SAT-M scores should be a higher priority.

Also, they really place a strong emphasis on the rigor of your HS curriculum. If your GC will certify that your HS course load was the most rigorous available to you, that will help; if not, it weakens your chances, but it may still be worth a shot.

The 3.94 UW is very competitive if there is good rigor.

bclintok,

show us how the OP’s SAT are both in the 25th percentile for UMich (which is what third quartile means after all).

I’ve posted Michigan’s 25th percentile M+V scores (1270).

OP has a 660 CR score and a 690 Math score. He/she is likely already at the second quartile for Michigan (median).

Let’s not try to make UMich out to some elite private for admissions where the OP might actually be a reach at.

@bclintonk I am currently taking rigorous douses right now, mostly AP’s, with a few business classes. I’m planning on taking the ACT in October, and I think I might do better on that because I’ve already taken the SAT 3 times. But thank you! UMich will definitely motivate me to shake off senioritis!

@Blah2009 Hahah thanks. I feel kind of naive because I don’t know too much about this, no matter how much I seem to research. I would like to hire a college counselor, but we can’t really afford one. I’m trying the best I can, so if you have any other colleges that seem to be a good fit for an aspiring undergraduate business student, please share! You have been very helpful
