I am a little confused about how the undergraduate business program is structured at UVA. Can you declare yourself a business major your first year, or do you have to apply to McIntire your sophomore year. Is McIntire the only undergrad business option at UVA or is it just a speciality program? Is there no way to major in business at UVA unless you get into McIntire?

Thanks.

It’s a two year program, you apply as a second year. Generally speaking, people who want to do the program say they are “pre-Commerce” during first and second year. There’s no way to do business at UVA unless you go to McIntire. You can do Econ or something in the College and then get an MS in Commerce (basically the two year curriculum in one year) though.

That’s makes it kind of risky. How hard is it to get into McIntire and what should your GPA be? Does it help it you play a varsity sport or are they solely concerned with your academic profile?

This might help - [UVa McIntire School of Commerce: Application Process: UVA Students](http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/undergrad/admissions/Pages/uva-application-process.aspx)
You are basically choosing the UVA experience with a possibility of majoring in economics instead of business, over definitely studying business at another college.
(my 2 cents) Considering you need an MBA for any serious business career anyways, I don’t know how much of a difference it makes, but I am not in a commerce field so they may more knowledgably disagree.

This will give you information on applying to McIntire as an undergraduate:
[UVa McIntire School of Commerce: Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/undergrad/admissions/Pages/default.aspx)

The following gives you admission statistics:
[UVa McIntire School of Commerce: Application Process: UVA Students](http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/undergrad/admissions/Pages/uva-application-process.aspx)

As you can see the offer rate for current UVa undergrads in 2012 was 61%. This can be a misleading statistic. The applicants are somewhat self-selecting as they have already been accepted to UVa, a competitive process to begin with, they will have completed the 54 prerequisites before enrollment (60-63 recommended), and are aware what previous applicants have been successful. Some that start UVa thinking Commerce due to either grades in prereq’s or change of interest will have gone a different direction. You can assume that the 61% selected is from a very qualified group of applicants.

note: crossed posts with hazel because I am a slow typer… :)

So let me be clear: I can’t major in finance if I don’t get into McIntire? With that said, how much easier does an economics degree from UVA help you get into Darden? Is easier to get into Darden if you come from UVA and could you still succeed in finance at Darden even if you didn’t major in finance?

No, you can major in economics outside of McIntire and commerce inside of McIntire. You can designate a finance concentration in both majors.

Here are some quotes from Darden’s website.

It seems you would be better to major in statistics, work as an actuary for 4 years, and then apply to Darden, than to apply straight out of undergrad from either McIntire or economics.

I will disagree with you here hazel, certainly many people do get an MBA but it is by no means a requirement if you have an undergraduate business background like McIntire.

OP, you can absolutely succeed in finance if you don’t get into McIntire. There are people in UVA Econ that get investment banking jobs at top firms, for example. You won’t be going to graduate business school until you get a few years of work experience anyways so you shouldn’t really be concerned about Darden right now.

Thanks for the perspective, hence my disclaimer!
