I believe I have a reasonable chance of getting in to Brown. I’ve got no questions or doubts about the quality of the academics there (who would!?) or the incredible education I could receive. But I believe in a balance of academic and social/fun quality of life for my college experience. So I would like to know if one can have fun, a great time…even a blast there?

Of course! Everyone is very cool and laid back, and there are plenty of parties if that’s your thing. Of course, I am living in Keeney, which is the supposedly the most exciting dorm complex, but I’m sure there are fun things going on everywhere. There are also lots of clubs and various activities in which one can participate.

The Princeton Review ranks Brown as the happiest school in the nation: [Brown happiest school in nation… again — Blog Daily Herald](http://blogdailyherald.com/2010/08/02/brown-happiest-school-in-nation-again/)

We didn’t get to that position without having a lot of fun :-)

Brown recently redid their website. It makes me sad because the good aesthetic will make more people apply.

On topic: Yes, you can have fun! It is true at any college.

I personally hate the new design, because now I can’t find anything :/

If you’re a current student, just make the bookmark/homepage the current student page, not the main page. The current student page has everything you would have wanted to click before, but had to go through 3-4 levels to get to.

And if you’re not a current student… I think our new page is probably better for navigating if you’ve got no experience with the old design.

As to original Q: nope, there’s no fun to be had here. Literally everyone just stays in their rooms all day and night long, studying, studying, studying. Because we know that’s what’s important in life, and in high school we were all the kind of people who tried to do as little outside of school as humanly possible. Spontaneous fun is actually abhorrent to anyone who enjoys academics.

^^ omg that’s actually really helpful =D

Short answer: Yes.

Medium answer: Fish Co. Wednesdays.

Long answer: Indeed, you will have ample opportunity to have fun at Brown throughout the course of the week and on the weekend, as long as you seek it out. It’s better to get into the swing of things early so you can meet everyone, though.

there’s a lot of fun to be had, and a lot of different social “scenes” to get involved with. don’t even make this a concern for yourself.

Theglee, aren’t you a parent?

Why bother posting in the tone of a prospective student?

You can definitely have fun here

@chsowlflax17:
Yeah, bookmarking the “Current Students” page is the fix for that incompetent front page, and thanks for the suggestion, but the next version should add a “Quick links” dropdown.
What’s the concept of this dumbed down front page?
People need video and can’t handle text?

Yes, you can and WILL have fun!

Even if you’re sooo overbooked academically… your classes will probably be fun because you chose them!

Brown is notoriously unstructured and loosey-goosey: one can readily avoid academic rigor and have fun (unlike academic hot-beds such as Swarthmore, U. Chicago, M.I.T. where fun can be had, but if you turn your back on a book it is liable to bite you in the neck). However, one could take challenging courses and work hard at Brown (e.g. pre-med).

I guess I’ll take the middle road here.

One can have fun taking a heavy (or even crazy) courseload, but similarly, one might not have fun even with a courseload that allows for plenty of socializing. Odds are, one will be happier if one’s taking courses one enjoys and if one’s workload and activities correspond to how busy one likes to be. But Brown’s social life may or may not be what you’re looking for. So do take that into account - I have no interest in going to formal parties, no interest in using substances, and very little interest in structured activities like clubs. There are still ways for me to have fun, but it’s been very difficult to have floormates not understand that I don’t want to spend all of my free time in clubs and such.
