Hello,
I'm an international student from Brazil and I'm thinking of transfering to Mount Holyoke. However, I am concerned about the stereotypes I've heard about the College. It's said that the queer population on campus is less vocal than Smith and "more polished". While in no way I wish to say that this is wrong, I am afraid of not being welcomed there for my "radical appearance" (as some would put it).
Help? Advice? Truth, please?

I trust I was not the only one to Private message Mentalanarchy to reassure her both schools are accepting of diversity, but clearly current student’s opinions would be best. How about a little support for our brave Brazilian prospie!

I’m not a current student yet, but I visited last weekend, and there were a large visible queer population. I met a fair amount of butches and trans; I probably saw at least a few butches in the classes I sat in.It seems like a -very- inclusive environment and as a queer individual myself, that made me happy There’s also a queer house called Jeannette Marks house, in which the lbta [right acronym? I’m not sure!] club meets. It’s pretty amazing :p

You’ll be more than fine! As a current MHC student, I think I would know :)

Message me if you want to chat more.

I couldn’t agree more with ceb612. I am a bi student at MHC and have seen gay (and bi and straight) people of all different styles and appearances. Yes, we have the reputation of being more preppy in general than Smith, but… it’s only half true. We have great diversity. I, too, would love to chat if you’d like to know more about this. Honestly, though, your “butch”-ness, as you put it, won’t really have anything to do with your social life here - people truly tend to gravitate towards kind people. Simple as that. :)

I’m a lesbian and have applied to mount holyoke. Is it easy to meet other lesbians/date?
