Butler vs. Villanova!

Hi! Less than a month until May 1st and I still don’t know where to go! Just when I realized how much I think Villanova is a great fit for me, I also heard that I would have to pay the full price. At Villanova I would be an Econ major in CLAS and at Butler I would be in their Business School. Both of which I am happy with. Is it worth it to go to Villanova even though it is literally twice the cost?? Can anyone who went to their second or third choice school share what that was like? I’m scared that it I go to Butler I might spend four years wishing I went to Villanova. Please offer me advice/ insight if you have any!

For reference I was also accepted to but did not visit Gonzaga, Fordham, Northeastern, and Loyola in Maryland, so I guess those are somewhat in the mix too.

  1. If you didn’t yet I’d suggest you take some time to look up the curriculum for a business school program and an economics major (look online at the school websites) – you will see they are quite different. Consider if one or the other is a better fit for your interests and aptitudes.
  2. Are both schools affordable without hardship/debt?
  3. Are any other schools you have in the mix affordable? or closer to the price of Butler?
  4. Have you visit the schools or do you plan to visit?

Hi @happy1 thank you for your help!

  1. I have and realize that there are pros and cons to both but I think I could be happy in either, so that is not really an issue.

  2. This is the tricky one- I am the third child to go to college and my siblings schools were both under 30k a year, so 65k a year is definitely a scary number. My family is not is not the elite- college type (if that makes any sense) but I do think that my family is able to pay the full price if needed. We’re just not sure if Villanova is really worth twice as much as other colleges.

  3. UIUC, Creighton, Gonzaga, Fordham (kinda) but I did not visit and cannot visit before May 1st, so I’m not sure if I would attend these.

  4. Yes! Enjoyed both but could see myself more at Villanova because of its accessibility to Philly and NYC. That being said, I don’t know if “seeing myself” somewhere is enough of a reason for me to go to Nova.

It boils down to preference versus affordability – and IMO that is something you can only sort out with your parents.

Villanova at $65K vs. Butler at $33K? I’d choose Butler in a heartbeat. Yes, Villanova is a very good school and the Business School is especially well regarded right now – but you’re not in VSB – and even if you were, it is not worth $130,000+ (over 4 years) unless your family truly would not miss the money. I have lived in or near Philadelphia my entire life and think it’s a great city, especially for young people–but again, far too much of a cost differential to justify.

It’s a shame you don’t have time to visit any of the other schools; you have some good choices there.

If you go to Butler, you’ll have no idea what Villanova would actually have been like, so no way to know if you would have liked it more, less, or exactly the same. If you decide on Butler, mentally make it your first choice and don’t waste any time wondering about what might have been someplace else.

Talk with your parents and ask them how much they can afford from income and savings (not from any possible parent/cosigned loans).

If you do (tuition, fees, room, board) - (scholarships, grants) =
What’s your cost at each university?
