Buy or Rent a Fridge?

Anyone know anything about the fridge/microwave rental option purportedly ok'd by Pomona college received via mail? Versus buying an inexpensive fridge, etc., and trying to store over the summer (long distance student). Fridge is a necessity, and used at boarding school (but was allowed to store over the summer at school without a problem.) Also, suggested meal plan for frosh? (If you keep a fridge and like to order out for food a few times a week-speaking of which, how are the local options, and any recommendations?)
Thanks for any responses whatsoever!

Do NOT rent the micro-fridge (or whatever they call it). It is a complete ripoff. The best option is to buy them yourself (or split the cost with your roommate) at the nearby Sears or Target once you get here. It's worth the purchase since you get to keep it for four years and may even be able to sell it off when you graduate. Pomona students get to store up to 5 boxes (of any size), a bike, and a piece of furniture for free, and your fridge can count as a box. As long as you don't wait until the last minute, you'll be fine storing it somewhere on campus in the storage rooms.

As for the meal plans, I recommend the 12 meal plan if those who don't eat breakfast, and 16 for those who do. As a underclassman, I remember Mixed Bowl (fast-food Thai) and Roundtable (Pizza) were the most popular to have delivered, but you get sick of those after a while. Of course, there is always In-N-Out to drive to!

Thanks! Much appreciated.

D and her roommate bought a used fridge from another student last year for very little money. For this coming year, they decided to let D keep the fridge since she'll have a single. She stored it at school over the summer.

Buy what you need and get what you want. As noted above the rentals are a ripoff and then between school years there is some storeage at school and several excellent private storage facilities very near to campus.

I know of a guy who is soliciting used fridges on facebook for $50 (he bought them off of graduating seniors). It seems like a pretty good deal, and the fridges will be waiting on campus for you.

Jeez, when my D graduated, she just left it outside her dorm for anyone to pick up. It wasn't worth the her trouble to pack it home or to sell it. Ditto for my son, he left it at his apt. too when he graduated. All the money we spent on their education.......

When my S moved out of his dorm this year, you could have furnished an entire apartment building with the stuff other people had left laying in the halls as "trash". It was a sad if not disgusting site.

Woo free furniture! There you go XD

Next time go in to find stuff in the hallways ;)
