I chose UT Austin McCombs over Rice and I am regretting it badly. Of course, the deadline for Rice’s deposit was May 1st, but does anyone think it would be possible for Rice to let me change my decision and commit to them instead of UT? I’m seriously feeling so crappy about this, and i knew I made a mistake the day after I made my decision I REALLY want to go to Rice now and double major in MTEC and CS, which would be pretty difficult for me to do at UT. I wish I never made the mistake… I will call the admissions office tomorrow and see if anything can be done.
“I will call the admissions office tomorrow and see if anything can be done.”
This is the right thing to do. Stay calm and professional whatever they say. Good luck.
The answer you get from Rice may vary depending on how long ago you declined Rice and even from year to year depending on yield and space available. I am not sure anyone here can give you a firm answer. Call them tomorrow, as you planned. Good luck!
Thank you. I definitely will be fine regardless of what happens, I won’t die.
i declined on the night of may 1st. it was obviously a tough decision for me lol!
And…?
Not trying to be rude, but not sure why you said that… my two comments were replies to previous comments. If you were asking about the purpose of my post, it was to see if anyone has had similar experiences or knows anything regarding this issue.
Why did you choose UT in the first place and what changed your mind? I really do hope it works out for you with Rice but buyer’s remorse is very normal and sometimes you have to accept that it’s part of the process and understand that you made the choice you did for a reason and that it is after all the right choice. There was a poster a couple of years ago whose son changed his mind and then back again. (The schools were incredibly nice about it.) The first choice was the right choice. Just be honest with yourself why you are feeling the way you are.
and… meant what was the outcome? Did you call Rice? Whats the update?
Got it… I just posted this today, so I will be calling tomorrow, May 4th. I emailed earlier, but the admissions officer I was connected with is apparently not in town (I was told today), so calling tomorrow is my last and best chance.
Ah- misread the time stamp. Thought you posted am, not pm. That said, use email email your counselor and follow up with a call in the morning.
Good Luck to you! Can your school guidance counselor help also? Many times they have good relationships with folks in the admissions offices and can get a call returned quickly.
@sammito1 - were you able to call today? What is the outcome?
My daughter initially committed to another school (like you, at the the last minute) and then decided that she should have chosen Rice.
She contacted Rice Admissions, and they were quite accommodating. They agreed to admit her on the condition that she FIRST contacted the other school and formally declined her initial acceptance there. She had to provide Rice with a copy of the communication in which she did that.
She has just completed her sophomore year at Rice, and she has enjoyed her time there (though, in truth, I’m fairly confident that she would have been happy at the other school, too).
Good luck!
I was only offered a gap year, and no other option to start this year
Take the gap year or go enjoy UT (an excellent school). Great options.
@sammito1 - looks like Rice is over-enrolled and hence the offer for gap year. What did you decide?
One of my daughter’s friends committed to Stanford instead of Rice. She got to Stanford and had buyers remorse. She has lots of friends and family members at Rice. Rice also offered her a gap year.
