Buying a bike

Is there any place I can buy a decent bike at/near UCSD for $100-$150? Also, is it better to get a street bike or a mountain bike? I haven't been to much of the campus except for Warren Mall.

just wondering, but does everyone on campus own a bike?

You mean the closest walmart if your price range is only $100 - $150… and they only have garbage department store bikes… but if you’re afraid it’ll be stolen go ahead and buy a cheap bike so thieves will steal garbage.

Obviously not everyone owns a bike on campus as it’s not required… there are other forms of transportation you see ;)

I got mine at target for $150. It’s nice.

@leukybear: I’m not expecting to do any bike-a-thons, just need to get from point a to b so a cheapo bike works fine xD

@$KingsElite$: My old bike was from there lol. It got stolen though, at driving school of all places… lmao. Is there a Target near campus? I’ll probably be walking there and riding it back.

^Well actually, there isn’t one within walking distance. My mom drove me and we got it.

Hmm, I might just go at the end of move in day then. Thanks! :)

Buy it from Craigslist. I bought my old Lemond bike for around $300 used when the retail price was around $1200. Just learn how to inspect bike frames, tires, wheels, and fixtures, and never buy bikes New again.

I second the Craigslist idea but be really wary of scams or rip offs… just ask as many questions as you can, inspect as much as you can, like Oyama said.

not eeveryone owns a bike but it’s really useful considering how big the campus is. :slight_smile: I didn’t have one last year and did without. but it definitely helps

@Oyama: any links to where I can learn how to inspect them? xD

@kewlosaurusrex

It’s pretty easy (trust me I work at a bike shop and deal with them everyday lol)…

Use your eyes a to look for dents (I would walk away from bikes with major ones, bigger/ around the size of a quarter), rust on the frame, and for signs of it under the paint.
If something looks wrong or bent then it probably is from an accident.

Check if the wheels are true. Spin the wheels with your hands; and see if the wheel is wobbly or not.

Check for wear and aging on the tires. Wear is looking at the thread pattern and age is for cracks in the rubber.

Gears are pretty easy, just see if the bike fully shifts through all gears. It might be a little rough at the beginning if the bike has been sitting around in someone’s garage or outside. Just re lubricate the gears once you get it or even better, have a bike shop technician take a look at it and give it a tune up.

Awesome! Thanks leukybear!

No problem; I also forgot to mention that you should always test ride the bike you are going to buy from somebody off CL… you should also figure out the size bike you can ride off google.

a lot of people longboard too :o

ouch, please don’t open that can of worms again …

Yea same, I’m bringing mine too…

i really want a cute(but not sure enough to get stolen =P ) beach cruiser, but i’m not sure if it’s a good idea…
beach cruiser or mountain bike?

@ciennabun

From what I’m hearing, you must be a girl. Well, beach cruisers are not that common to be stolen (especially when compared to say a road bike) once protected with a proper bike lock from a legitimate bike store (DO NOT BUY A LOCK FROM WALMART! PRODUCTS FROM WALMART ARE UNDERCUT DELIBERATELY BY WALMART IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A LOW PRICE; aka the PROFIT MOTIVE), as reselling them is quite hard. But, UCSD is hilly and all beach cruisers are singlespeed, therefore no gears, making it hard for you to go up hilly areas (especially for women who are less muscular than men, no offense meant at all).
I would recommend a mountain bike with gears as those gears will sure come in handy riding around UCSD and La Jolla which are hilly.
~Assuming you are going to buy your bike from walmart, as they do commonly sell those two varieties, you can always compromise between the two if you’re willing to spend a couple of more dollars for cuteness (hey if you’re just going to spend the money on a season’s worth of clothes that you’re not going to wear in a year, get a long lasting bike that’ll probably most likely outlast you) at a legitimate bike store for a geared beach cruiser.
