Does anybody have good advice as to what cars are good for college students to drive around, especially in the California area? If so, kindly help me out here.

No racers, no super-luxury cars, other than that I'm pretty flexible.

Go for a well-maintained japanese small, light, I4 based car with around 100-120k. That would be something like a Honda Civic or Accord. Toyota also makes some decent cars--I'm a fan of the Camry but only in V6. 1997-1999 models of all of these are excellent. Mazda also made a very decent car before the Madza 3 Speed, but I forget what it is called.

If you have the money and your dad is footing the bill, push for a hybrid, like the Toyota Prius or hybrid Honda Civic. If you are not buying, you will be driving a reliable and safe car and saving a LOT of money. If that fails, as chuy says, go the regular small Asian car with great gas mileage route ;].
