Ok, I'm not getting my license until November, but I'm starting to think about cars that I can get. My price range is only going to be like $2000-$2500. I'm not interested in trucks or two-door vehicles. I actually know people with '98 ford explorers that were in my range, but I'm not sure if they would run good. I'm also worried about the upfront cost on insurance..I heard it's like 40% down, which means I'll have to save up more money :( What cars would you recommend for me (make, model, year). And any other advice??

-No sports cars since insurance would be skyrocket high
-Better to choose an older car(1990's-2000), cheaper make and model. Unless you can afford to pay alot of insurance money.
-My quote was 3k for 6 months, so its 6k for a year for just insurance.

I would 6k could be a little on the high end. I dont know what my parents pay for my brother, and I per a year. As far as cars go I agree with jmgotkp lookf or cheaper and older used cars. Sometimes you can find great used cars with little mileage on them!

edmunds is probably one of the best sites.. my friends bought nice cars for like 30k.. audi a6's.. yet my town is just filthy rich and spoiled :(

6k for insurance? I pay around 1k a year. Although I have a crappy car, and my car has no insurance, I just pay for coverage.

you gotta be kidding me. im from NJ so my insurance would be high compared to some other less populated state. its allstate also so its abit more expensive with state farm. i have a jeep 07' srt8 so that can be another reason..

i've been told by multiple people that insurance in MA for new drivers is like around 2500/yr. 6k is a little ridiculous, lol. anyway, moving on, cars????

I agree with whoever said to look for good older model used cars. Some can be great deals, but be careful about what you buy in case it's too good to be true. Also, I wouldn't recommend an SUV or a big car if you're going to be paying for gas--the gas mileage on most is pretty bad.

Jim, I live in the populated state, plus I am a guy. I did go to driving school though, but they did not take much off of the bill. I think I have Amica, but not 100 percent.

damn. i dunno why i pay 3k and my parents are both longtime allstate members after they were statefarm.

I had a '92 Chevvy Lumina which I adored. It was huge and we got a good deal on it- $1800. Plus the heating/AC worked.

I really liked my friend's Neon but I think they are two doored...

I think my insurance is around a thousand a year.

they have four doors, at least the newer ones do.
