Buying A Cell Phone

Our family currently has Verizon and we were planning to add a line for me. However, Verizon requires some time up data plan ($10-30 a month per phone line) for all of their decent phones. We thought that would be unnecessary and expensive so my parents tried out two of their regular phones this past month. They are extremely unreliable - we don't even get calls when we're at home. So, we were thinking of switching to Sprint because their plans with decent phones (including the data plans) are still financially comparable to Verizon's admittedly crappy phones' plans.

Which of the two have better coverage on campus and in St. Louis? If Verizon, is it because students have their nicer phones and do you know anyone that has the simple phone but still gets coverage? Or would Sprint with a data capable phone be a more reliable option?

Thank you!

AT&T has the best reception. Sprint is okayish from what I recall.

^Thanks. AT&T though has lousy reception where I live though so that’s why I didn’t mention it.

Any other thoughts?

From what I’ve noticed, at&t has the best reception (because they put in a new tower just a year ago), verizon is pretty good everywhere, and sprint is so-so.

I live in the area, and I use AT&T without any problems at all. I can’t speak for the other cell phone companies, but AT&T should do just fine for you.

Thanks again. Sorry that I wasn’t clear in my other post, AT&T isn’t reliable where I live and since I will be on a family plan and my parents will be using the service I have there here, it wouldn’t be an option.

Anyone else care to discuss the other two?

Most people I know have AT&T, but if that’s not possible for you then I think Verizon would be your second-best bet. I know a lot of people who use Verizon too.

There are a few other threads on this, although some are probably old enough that the new AT&T tower hadn’t gone up yet:

I use AT&T since that’s what works best back home, but I’d probably say Verizon > Sprint, although you’d still be fine with either.

Agree with ^
