Buying a Computer after arriving at Stanford

Not through any deal that's open to the public. (small business deals)

Wow, Mongolia! I'm arriving from Kuwait :) Can't wait to meet you! I've been thinking lately of ordering my ibook via the apple website and picking it up when I get there - sounds like a better idea, no? That way when I do get there I won't die of shock if by any chance the ibook happens to be sold out for whatever reason.

I talked to the Stanford Bookstore today. Their prices for Apple laptops are cheaper than through the Apple web site. About $200 cheapers for the one I am looking at buying. You could buy it ahead of time and they could hold it for you.

Cardinal...really? Which computer are you planning to buy. I wonder if they have the ibook deal with the ipod. I was thinking of just going to the apple store which I think is at the Stanford shopping center. nkay, I don't think the ibooks will be sold out since we will arrive earlier than the rest but go ahead and do what you want. I just dont like buying stuff online...

I am looking at a Powerbook. The ipod rebate is good through the Stanford Bookstore on campus. If you go to their web site, you'll find their 800 phone number. Just ask for the computer department and ask for the bundle price for the ibook to compare it with the Apple's web site price. If you get it through them, they can hold it for you so you know you will have it and don't need to ship it.

Regarding buying a new computer, do you guys think it's better to buy an external CD ROM drive than a DVD drive? The "Welcome to Stanford" book said that a CD-ROM drive was a must for the burning purposes, but do you think it is necessary to have the DVD burning/viewing function as well?

I am not sure if I will have the time to watch DVD's on my computer or burn DVD's instead of CD-ROM's. Probably a CD burner is enough for college life, but if the drive takes up the same physical space, I might as well buy a more multifunctional drive. I would appreciate any opinions on this. Thanks!

I would get the DVD drive. A DVD holds enough data to make it useful for creating backups (and you need to do backups!!!). You can also burn CDs with it.
