buying a laptop

I'm an incoming freshman in EECS, and I was wondering what kind of laptop I should buy. I've used Macs my whole life, but I don't know if it would be better to get a PC. Macs are so much more expensive! Are they really worth the money? What kind of laptop do most people in EECS have?

plenty EECS/CS major who have Macs end up dual-booting Windows 7.

I don’t know if this is still true, but when Windows 7 first came out all EECS/CS students got two free copies of Windows 7 (one for 32-bit, one for 64-bit).

I’m an incoming transfer in EECS, so I don’t really know yet either… but I would assume that most EECS students have a PC (someone correct me if I’m wrong!).

If you’re used to Macs, then I’m sure you could use one and find whatever software you need. But from my experience with programming at community college, required software tends to be more readily available on Windows than Macintosh.

I’ll be bringing my old, cheap, P.O.S Toshiba laptop :D

Buy a Mac if that’s what you like and get vmware fusion or parallels. All EECS students or anyone taking a CS class can still get Windows 7 licenses, plus some other stuff like Visual Studio.
