buying books online

I was looking at the book list I got when I logged into UCLA store site thingy, I signed up for 4 classes but there was only 2 books listed which are for chem and math, so there is no book for english and civil eng intro?
now for the chem and math books
Chem one is: "Oxtoby (New Low Price) Princ Mod Chem (6th)(pkg W/custom Ssm & Oxford Cou, THOMSON Hardback, 6, 07," listed at $206.75... is this book the same as this one: "http://www.amazon.com/Principles-Modern-Chemistry-David-Oxtoby/dp/0534493661/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7827067-2968164?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1187400429&sr=8-1" which is only $146.80... if so is there any reason to buy from ucla store? also should I buy the solution manual as well?
for the math one: "Rogawski Single Variable Calculus, 312 Paperback, 1, 07" at $72.75... same as this one: "http://www.amazon.com/Single-Variable-Calculus-Jon-Rogawski/dp/1429210680/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/102-7827067-2968164?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1187401153&sr=1-3"?

HOW TO FIND THE ISBN OF TEXTBOOKS
http://community.livejournal.com/ucla/913546.html

You still have plenty of time to buy them online even if you only pay for media mail. I think you can check out the solution manual in the library reserve. (At least for chemistry)

If it lists a bunch of code at the bottom of the page to the effect of "cannot find books for these courses," then it's possible that the professors haven't entered it into the system.

Don't know about those books...

Does anyone have any opinion on how reliable half.com is? I ordered a couple of books from some seemingly reliable power sellers, but I am curious how the prices are so cheap for new textbooks? 20-30% cheaper than barnes and nobles. When they say brand new, are they really "brand new"?

i always buy my books from half.com. as long as you buy from power sellers you should be fine. ive never had a problem with the books.

I think people are trying to sell at higher prices so they list their books as "brand new' if the books look new and no highlights. LOL

the livejournal way don't seem to work

anyone else want to help me out? I want to get these books out of the way soon

what does it mean if there are 3 books listed under one class? they have the similar titles...this one is for math 3a. i thought i only needed one book for math 3a.

i went to uclastore.com and searched my class textbooks under textbooks

dawritingmachine: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=384119

search some old textbook threads..

and look at the ISBN topic if you haven't yet.

well as I said the livejournal way(the one you use the source to get ISBN) don't work... I searched old threads but they are not really too helpful since im about 80% sure I found the right books and I just want someone to confirm I got them right but it seems no one bothered to use the links to see if I got them right

the live journal way DOES work for everyone else

well I tried the live journal way for the 3rd time after malishka31 said it works for everyone else and it still doesn't seem to work for me... I went to the source and got:

PREFER NEW

[/quote]
according to the site the ISBN would be 9780495481041... so I got the 13 digit ISBN and went onto barnes and noble, they said there is no match for ISBN, then I went on amazon... still no ISBN match... so everyone(since "the live journal way DOES work for everyone else) please tell me what im doing wrong... im just a stupid kid that wants to get his books early...

they used to use the ISBN10 code, but for some reason they switched to the less widely used ISBN13 code (i wonder why.... )

sometimes the ISBN doesnt work because its a proprietary ISBN for a special package only for UCLA (like it might include a CD or solutions manual or something that doesnt normally come with it), or the whole book itself is custom printed for UCLA. you should be fine searching by title, author, publisher and edition if the ISBN doesnt work.

Isn't the ISBN13 code similar to the ISBN 10 minus the first three digits (978)?

And bn.com has ISBN13 too.

but the ISBN13 didn't work on bn nor amazon... so I don't see how it would work for everyone else but me... I did try name and publisher and everything which is why I posted this thread, to make sure I got the right books by searching with name and publisher... I mean if I got the ISBN to match I wouldn't even posted this thread at all...

The Rogawski book has been discussed to death in some other threads; do a search. And I'm pretty sure the chem book deal has been hashed out in another thread, also.

Rogawski book: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=384074 Go look at what Boelter posted.

Oxtoby book: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=378585&highlight=oxtoby Go look at what Boelter posted.

newsflash: you don't need a textbook for scerri's 20a class.

About buying books online.. I checked out amazon and half.com, and both of them give me slightly better deals than the UCLA store. I could get my math textbook used for $100ish online, which was $116 at the UCLA store. However, prices at bruinwalk seem A LOT cheaper. I've seen the book selling for about $50ish, and the condition is usually good. I don't understand why bruinwalk's books sell for a lot less, or am I searching wrong in amazon and half.com?
