buying books?

I've been looking at the books I need to purchase, and some of them come in a "package" and I don't know what that means. Mostly the things like "RESPONSE SYSTEM
KEYPAD RF" for my chemistry and biology classes. Also, is it better to rent or to buy? I probably won't be getting my books from the bookstore, but from other websites like half.com.

Here is the list of books I need if that helps:

The bookstore allows you to look up the books for your classes, but just copying the link won’t keep your list saved. You need to write them down.

 • Titles that are designated as “Package Component” are components of a required package used for your course. If you would like to purchase the entire package, please select it. If however, you plan on using only pieces of the package, some or all may be available individually. If you purchase only package components, you may save money if used copies are available.
That’s the list of things that I need. I’m just generally confused on what the packages are and the response systems are…

It can be a bit confusing. Generally speaking, if a course you’re in requires a package and several other things, everything will actually come in the package, and buying everything listed would just be redundant (package components are often sold separately, and are included on your list of textbooks whether or not you’ll need them). If you’re willing to wait until the first day of classes to purchase books (though you may miss out on the opportunity to rent if they run out of copies), professors will generally clarify what exactly you need to be buying (you could also try contacting a professor in advance- just send them an email, and chances are they’ll be happy to explain exactly what you need to buy). Some of the above are lab materials, which you won’t be able to rent anyway, so its not a big deal if you wait until the class to figure out what is what.

Response Systems are more generally referred to as “Clickers”. Basically, they’re little remote controls that allow the lecturer to poll the class (its similar to the ask the audience lifeline on Who Want’s to be a Millionaire). Some professors will use these to hold in class quizzes (My Chemistry I professor would give us 1 or 2 multiple choice questions throughout his lectures, which could be answered for bonus points), but other professors will just use them to judge the classes level of understanding on a particular topic, or for more mundane purposes (taking attendance, voting on when to hold a test, etc). You should only need one clicker for all of your classes.

Oh nice, thank you so much for clearing that up for me!
