1) Do you buy all the recommended books?
2) How do you determine which ones to buy?
3) Do you usually buy them at the Cal bookstore or at other places like amazon.com or ebay?
4) Do you recommend getting the books and starting on them before the classes starts? (I mean, given the chances that one's class schedule might me subject to change within the 1st two weeks of classes)

1) I usually buy all the recommended books but find that I don't really use them.. Depends on the class though.. so ask the professor or something

2) I just buy them all.. but again ask.. you don't have to buy all your books before class starts

4) I recommend waiting the first few days of class to buy books. The professor might give you clearer instructions about the books you need. Or you can ask if you have any questions.

I heard that half.com was really good, and I found a textbook I need at a good price. It says the edition I need, but nowhere can I find the upc number, not even on the student store website.

You can figure out which books to buy from the cal student store (granted your teacher has already given them a list of what you need). Both of the bookstores are fairly competitive in price its just a matter of what suits you.

You can use amazon to find the ISBN number if you already know the author/title and edition of the book. It's about 1/2 way down on the book's webpage. Hope that helps.

ditto to what pikasof (why do I want to say pikachu?!) said. . . okay, I looked on Amazon, and thanks, found the isbn, but there's TWO of them, so what's up with that? Sorry for being completely stupid about this. . . . I'm kinda embarrassed about being so clueless.

use either one. and go to campusi.com and paste it in, and it will give you the cheapest price from a variety of sources (incl ebay, amazon, half, abebooks, amazon mktplace)

Are you sure that both are the same type of book: I mean make sure one isn't hardcover or international edition or a study guide of some type. Also make sure that they are comparable in price with the one sold in the bookstore, that way you can be more sure that its the correct one that you see online.

If you want, send me a pm and I will take a look. I can check on campus in a few days for you if you're in a rush.
